New York University (NYU) is a private, nonsectarian research university based in New York City. It was established in 1831, and is one of the largest private, non-profit institutions of higher education in the United States. The Study Abroad department within the institution offers undergraduate semester or academic year abroad options and freshmen abroad programs. The tradition of these began in 1958 with the founding of NYU Madrid. Since then, NYU’s offer of international opportunities has rapidly grown through the fully staffed Global Academic Centers, which are located in some of the world's most dynamic cities. Some of the destinations include Accra, London, Berlin, Shanghai, Sydney, Tel Aviv, Paris, Prague, Florence, etc.
