The SIHS was established in 1992 by the Directors of the Hamilton College Academic Year in Spain with the purpose to be an independently operated academic and cultural program. The principal aim of the SIHS is to immerse students into a Spanish speaking environment and integrate them as fully as possible into Spanish life and culture. The program attracts college and university students, who wish to gain an understanding of a different culture and its language. The program is organized in collaboration with the Universidad de León, has a strict adherence to a Spanish-only rule (for which each student signs a pledge) and sets extremely high academic standards.
