Originally established in 1979 to provide higher education opportunities for those living in the far reaches of northern Finland, the University of Lapland has now become an important educational institution for the entire country. The university has turned out every fourth lawyer, every third university-educated expert in art and design, close to ten percent of the social scientists, and many talented educational professionals in the country of Finland. The school’s graduates occupy numerous positions of responsibility in society and business throughout Finland and the world –something the staff takes great pride in.
The individuals that comprise the student body at the University of Lapland come from all corners of Finland and the globe. Although the university’s primary goal is to educate these future professionals and researchers, the staff and faculty also want their students to enjoy themselves while studying in this arctic paradise. The university’s vivacious Student Union, combined with the numerous cultural opportunities and outdoor recreation and sports facilities available in the city of Rovaniemi, ensure that students are able to lead sociable and healthy lives outside of the classroom.
