The Universidad de Murcia, or University of Murcia, is the primary university in the city of Murcia in Spain. Home to nearly 40,000 students, it is the largest university in the Region de Murcia. After the University of Salamanca (established in 1218) and the University of Valladolid (1241), the University of Murcia is the oldest university in Spain; it was founded in the year 1272 AD by King Alfonso X of Castile, under the crown of the same name.

Although its origins date back to the late 13th century, the present-day University of Murcia was founded in 1915. Today, as it nears its centenary, the institution has strived to complement its history and tradition with the very latest in modern installations and technology. The school’s complete approach to education involves the students at each step of their scholastic journey and commits them to their social environment.

The majority of the facilities and buildings at the University of Murcia are divided between two campuses. The older campus—La Merced—is situated in the heart of Murcia, while the larger of the two campuses, Espinardo, is located just 5 kilometers to the north of the city. A third campus, devoted to the Medical and Health sciences, is currently under construction in a suburban area known as Cuidad Sanitaria Virgen de la Arrexaca, located 5 kilometers south of the town center; and a fourth campus is also planned for the town of San Javier—a campus that will host Murcia’s Sport Science facility.

Facilities

The University of Murcia is an institution devoted to providing higher education to the student public. Among its main goals and objectives are the creation, development and research into science, technology and culture through study and research and the transmission of such knowledge through education.

As such, the University of Murcia plays hosts to very modern facilities located in the various University Faculties and Colleges and the Experimental Science Support Service (SACE). The latter of these facilities is located in Espinardo, next to the Faculties of Biology, Medicine, Chemistry and Veterinary Science, and includes services such as laboratory animals, scientific calculations, cultivation of tissues, agricultural and forestry experiments, radio protection and waste, scientific equipment, microscopy, image analysis, and psychology equipment, as well as research support laboratories.

The University of Murcia also boasts two extensive libraries with over half a million books and some 10,000 scientific journals that can be consulted in any of the 3,000 reading areas. The Antonio de Nebrija Library is located on La Merced campus. In addition, the Main Library in Espinardo houses a European Documentation Center.

Sports are also very important to the University of Murcia and the school enjoys a great number of facilities. These are mainly in Espinardo, although some are located in the city center. These sports facilities include sports halls, football and rugby pitches, seven-a-side football pitches, aerobic and weight rooms, a gymnasium, tennis and squash courts, a pelota court, training areas, an indoor climbing wall and an indoor swimming pool. The Sports Activities Service promotes and organizes sport at all levels and for all the groups that comprise the university community.

Additional services are also provided by the University of Murcia for the benefit of its students. The Information Service (SIU), for example, provides general information to all members of the university, and runs the website and various information data banks. Further information can be found at (http://www.um.es/siux). Another benefit of the university is the Student Welfare Service (SAOP), which seeks to respond to the psychological needs, academic performance issues, family problems, and legal questions that may directly or indirectly affect the members of the university community. Further information about this service can be found at (http://www.um.es/saop). Finally, there is the Careers Office (COIE), which provides students with a link to the world of employment by organizing courses and providing students with internships in a variety of enterprises.
