Art History of Spain Tour

Come and see some of the world’s greatest art treasures on SpainExchange’s Art History of Spain Tour ! As you make your way through the cities such as Granada , Toledo , Leon , and Madrid , your students will gain a general knowledge of Spanish architectural and its fine arts. This 10-day tour highlights the Spanish masters and their works as well as the socio- political climate of the corresponding period. ¡Vengan con nosotros!


Day 1: Arrival and Granada

Your SpainExchange guides will be awaiting your arrival at Madrid Barajas airport. After collecting your luggage a tour bus will take your group to your first travel destination, the enchanting city of Granada . Your group will enjoy a walk around the historical center and an evening view of one of the world’s architectural gems, La Alhambra palace. Dinner will be provided for your group in your hotel.

Day 2: Granada

The Arab occupation lasted for 8 centuries, and the influence of this period known as the “Al-Andalus”, is seen reflected throughout the architecture and the art of Spain . SpainExchange will take your group on a tour of La Alhambra and the Generalife, the royal palace of the Arab kings. Located in the 15th century palace of Charles V , are the Alhambra Museum of Spanish-Muslim Art and the Museum of Fine Arts . Enjoy a relaxing “cena”, or typical Spanish dinner in your hotel followed by a good night’s sleep!

Day 3: Córdoba

After breakfast in your hotel, your SpainExchange guides will take your group to Córdoba. The “Mezquita”, or mosque, was constructed by the Moors on the site of a Visigoth church in the 8th century and later converted into a Christian cathedral in the 13th century, after the reconquest of Córdoba by the Catholic Monarchs, Isabel and Ferdinand. It also houses a fascinating museum full of religious art and relics. In the afternoon, your guides will take you on a walking tour of Córdoba through the Jewish Quarters to the beautiful Torre de la Calahorra. Dinner will be provided for you at your hotel.

Day 4: Toledo

On day four of your trip, SpainExchange will whisk you off to explore the art treasures of the small fortress city of Toledo . Your group will have a guided tour of the impressive Gothic Cathedral of Toledo followed by a visit to the museum dedicated to one of Spain ‘s most acclaimed artists, El Greco. After seeing his masterpiece The Burial of Count Orgaz, take an evening walk through the winding streets of this rare medieval hilltop city to appreciate the Arabic, Jewish and Spanish influences in the architecture.

Day 5: León

León is home to one of the most splendid examples of Spanish Romanesque architecture, the church of San Isidro . Your SpainExchange guides will take you on a visit of this 11th century church to observe its architecture and rare frescos. Your group will have free time to enjoy lunch and then meet back to visit, San Marcos Hostal, and Gaudi’s Casa de Botines.

Day 6 : Astorga

Your SpainExchange guides will take southeast of León to the town of Astorga . After checking into your hotel your group will visit the Cathedral of Santa Maria, originally a Romanesque church built in the XI century and added onto with a combination of Gothic, Neoclassical, Baroque and Renaissance architecture. Astorga is also home to the Palacio Episcopal de Astorga, a church designed by the Catalan modernist Antonio Gaudí, one of the most important artists in Spanish history.

Day 7: Madrid

After breakfast in your hotel, your tour bus and guides will meet your group to take you back to the capital of Madrid . After arrival and lunch, your SpainExchange guides will take you on a walking tour of the historic center: the 16th century Plaza Mayor (commissioned by King Phillip II in the Hispano-Flemish style with beautiful frescos decorating the Casa de la Panaderia), the Neoclassical Church of San Francisco el Grande, and the Baroque Church of San Isidro. Take the evening to relax in your hotel and prepare yourselves to visit some of the greatest museums in the world!

Day 8: Madrid

El Prado and the Museum Reina Sofia truly make Madrid a cultural center of the world. These museums house the masterpieces of Goya, Velázquez, Picasso, El Greco, Salvador Dalí, and Joan Miró, as well as artists from around the world. Enjoy some free time at lunch to promenade down the charming Paseo del Prado to the beautiful fountain of Cibeles. Enjoy dinner at your hotel and prepare yourself for your last exciting day in Spain !

Day 9: Aranjuez

Your SpainExchange guides will take you on an excursion just outside of Madrid to the royal vacation village of Aranjuez . Your group will visit the summer palace built by Phillip II in the 16th century and the gardens- designated a World Heritage site by UNESCO. Your tour will also include a visit to the Royal Barge Museum which houses a fascinating collection of crafts including a gilded ship used to transport the Spanish monarchs downriver to their royal spread. That’s what I call travelling in-style!

Day 10: Departure

Your guides will accompany you to the airport and assist to assure that you have everything you need for your trip back home. ¡Buen viaje!
