Catholic Pilgrimage Tour in Spain Learning from the Mystics

This Catholic Pilgrimage Tour in Spain, Learning from the Mystics, will help you experience the culture and environment of Spain’s great mystics, Theresa of Avila, John of the Cross, Ignatius of Loyola, Francis Xavier, and Dominic of Guzman, whose lives and apostleship brought freshness to the faith and inspired believers through the centuries to new commitments in their Christian walk. Features of this pilgrimage include daily mass, meditations on the lives of the saints by the group’s spiritual leader, free time for prayer and reflection, as well as guided tours of the cities visited.

Day 1. Arrival and becoming acquainted

After an early morning arrival at Madrid ‘s Airport, your group will be transfer by private bus to your hotel in Avila . Following check in and a short rest, the group will gather to become acquainted with each other and for an overview the full program. Free time for prayer or to explore the city will follow with dinner provided at the hotel. Overnight stay in Avila .

Day 2. The life and work of St. Teresa – Avila

Your group will convene at Convento de la Encarnación for Mass and reflections on Saint Teresa of Avila ‘s life and spiritual legacy. Following breakfast at the hotel, a local guide will meet you for a tour of Avila ‘s key monuments such as its magnificent 12 th -century wall and the fortress-Cathedral. After lunch, your group will travel by bus to Segovia where you will have dinner and spend the night.

Day 3. St . John of the Cross – Segovia

Mass will be held at the Carmelite Convent where St. John of the Cross is buried with a meditation on his life and works. Breakfast at the hotel and check out will follow in preparation for travel to your next destination. Before departure, a local guide will lead a tour of the key monuments in Segovia such as the Roman Aqueduct and the Cathedral. Dinner and overnight stay provided in Zaragoza .

Day 4. The Apostle James ( SANTIAGO ) – Zaragoza

Your group will gather for Mass at Basilica del Pilar Holly Chapel followed by reflection on the Apostle James, patron of Spain –tradition tells us that the Virgin Mary came to Spain and visited him in the year 40 to encourage him in his efforts to convert Spain and its people to Christianity. After breakfast at the hotel, a local guided will lead a tour of the Basilica and city’s monuments followed by lunch. The group will depart for Barcelona where dinner and overnight stay will be provided.

Day 5. Saint Ignatius of Loyola – Monserrat ( Barcelona )

After breakfast at the hotel, the group will travel to the shrine of Our Lady of Monserrat, where Ignatius of Loyola had made his peace with God. Reflections on his conversion, life and spirituality will be followed by morning Mass at the Benedictine monastery . After lunch and back in Barcelona , a local guide will lead the group on a tour of some of the city’s most distinctive places, the Gothic Quarters, Holy Family Church , and Cathedral. You will have plenty of free time for prayer or to explore the city before dinner at the hotel. Overnight stay in Barcelona .

Day 6. St . Francis Xavier – Javier (Navarra)

The group will depart for Javier, birthplace of St. Francis, and Loyola, birthplace of Ignatius, shortly after breakfast and hotel check out. Prayer and meditation on St. Francis Xavier will take place on the bus as many hours of travel are scheduled for the day. The first stop will be at the Castle of Javier where St. Francis was born. After lunch the group will resume its journey to Azpeitia (LOYOLA), home of St. Ignatius. After arrival and check in at hotel you will have personal time for prayer, meditation or to explore the city. Dinner and overnight stay will be provided at Azpeitia.

Day 7. Travel from Loyola to Burgos

The daily Mass will be scheduled at Loyola’s Sanctuary. After Mass and breakfast at the hotel, you will visit the Basilica and the 13th century Tower House where St. Ignatius was born. Departure for Burgos will follow soon after lunch. Once in Burgos you will have free time to explore the city or for personal reflection. Dinner at hotel and overnight stay in the historic city of Burgos .

Day 8. Saint Dominic of Guzmán – Caleruega ( Burgos )

Attendance to Mass will be at the magnificent Cathedral of Burgos. Following breakfast and hotel check out, a local guide will lead a tour of the Cathedral and panoramic tour of the city by bus with immediate departure for Caleruega, birthplace of St. Dominic of Guzman. Lunch will follow. Once at Caleruega you will visit the Monastery where a meditation on the saint’s life and work will be lead by your group’s spiritual leader. After some free time, you will continue travel to Madrid for dinner and overnight stay.

Day 9. Return home

After breakfast at the hotel and check out, your group will be transferred to Madrid ‘s airport for your return flight home.
