In 1571, a Christian alliance formed by the Vatican, Spain and Venice, named “the Holy Alliance,” fought and gained victory under Don John of Austria (half brother of the king of Spain Felipe II) over Ottoman forces. In this battle, Miguel de Cervantes, author of Don Quixote, fought as a soldier. As results of the wounds suffered in the battle, he lost the use of his left arm. Cervantes has been known since then as “el manco de Lepanto” (the one-handed man of Lepanto).
Example: The Battle of Lepanto is one of the most evoked anniversaries in the history of Spain.

The 2nd day of May is a holiday in the region of Madrid in remembrance of the historic day in 1808 when the brave people of Madrid fought against Napoleon troop’s invasion. It was not only the people of Madrid, but citizens from everywhere in Spain who were not willing to consent to the literal royal treason of the King of Spain who had surrendered Spain to the French military leader. The following day, the French army massacred the people of Madrid. Goya, the Spanish painter immortalized this fatidic day on canvas. The painting is at El Prado Museum of Madrid
