About Career Colleges and Vocational Schools in Bahamas

he Bahamas, a small nation of 29 islands in the Atlantic Ocean, is perhaps best known as a wildly popular tourist destination, one that regularly attracts visitors from around the world, including many celebrities, who are looking to relax and unwind.  Aside from the thousands of tourists on the islands at any one time, there are also just over 350,000 residents, many of whom must fill the important jobs that are necessary to sustain the Bahamian economy and way of life.

To help ensure the Bahamian workforce is sufficiently trained to serve and excel in the career field of their choosing, the government, along with many private entities, has established a number of career colleges and vocational schools where individuals can gain the knowledge, skills, and in some cases, the certificate or diploma they need to succeed.  The largest of these schools, and certainly the most well-established, is the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute.

Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute

Founded in 1980, the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute is a government-funded training institute with two campuses:  one in Nassau, the capital of the Bahamas, and the other in Freeport.  According to the Institute’s mission statement its aim is to “produce highly-skilled individuals with strong work ethics through market-driven career and technical education and training, enabling them to achieve national and international credentials and participate in national development.”

Various career tracks are taught at this national institute, and there are over 160 full and part-time instructors lending their skill and expertise to ensure students receive a quality hands-on training experience.  Some of the skills taught here pave the way for tomorrow’s automobile mechanics, construction workers in a variety of trades, information technologists, beauty providers and fashion consultants.

Other Vocational and Career Training Available in the Bahamas

In addition to the Bahamas Technical and Vocational Institute, students and adults have a wealth of vocational training resources available to them.  Some of the more popular opportunities include:

Bahamas Hotel Training College

Tourism is by far the number one industry in the Bahamas, and with so many guests each year, the country must have qualified people to fill a variety of roles at the nation’s hotels and resorts.  The Bahamas Hotel Training College is one of the oldest and most generously-funded institutions of higher learning on the islands.  With 2 campuses, one in New Providence and the other in the Grand Bahamas, the school specializes in training students to excel in the hotel industry in a number of different capacities.  From desk clerks, hotel managers and valets, to chefs, wait staff and tour guides; the Bahamas Hotel Training College offers everything students need to succeed in this booming industry.

Bahamas Police College

At the publicly-funded police college, new recruits learn the ins and outs of police work and criminal justice. Most successful graduates go on to staff the country’s police force, helping to enforce the laws of the islands and keep its residents and thousands of yearly guests safe and protected.

Bahamas Public Service Training Center

At the Bahamas Public Service Training Center, an extension of the Department of Public Personnel, students are trained for a variety of entry level positions within the state and local government—civil servant positions that help keep the island running smoothly from day to day.
