Study in Petrozavodsk, Russia

Study in Petrozavodsk, Russia

Peter the Great made a great move when he founded the glorious city of Petrozavodsk. The European-influenced Petrozavodsk is one of Russia’s most beautiful but little-known cities, a veritable triumph of natural wonder and neoclassical art. Travelers can leave Moscow behind and explore this softer, more inviting side of Russia, while young men and women can join the huge population of post-secondary students pursuing higher education in this eastern Russian city.

Many locals know Petrozavodsk as a university town, and much of the population is, in fact, students of the city’s universities. However, this does not necessarily mean Petrozavodsk has a large number of such institutes. The main institution is the public Petrozavodsk State University, along with a pedagogical institution and a school of management, economics and law (a school existing as a subset of the Petrozavodsk State University). There is also a conservatory that aligns with the Petrozavodsk State University.

Students can enjoy a number of sights in Petrozavodsk, including some museums, lakeside sculptures and an Afghan War Memorial, commemorating soldiers lost in the Afghan conflict. Students can enjoy a mixture of Russian and Finnish cuisine in this cross-cultural city, before hopping on a boat-tour or taking a relaxing bicycle ride. Amusement and adventure parks await daring travelers, while dramatic theatres artistic cafes await the more culturally inclined.

Other considerations for students wishing to study in Petrozavodsk include:
  • Majority of courses taught in Russian, some Finnish and English.

Major Fields of Study in Petrozavodsk

Petrozavodsk is a very popular higher education destination for many students. Thanks to the Petrozavodsk State University, there is a wide amount of studies available to young students. However, the universities in Petrozavodsk offer very little in the way of art, design, music or performing art studies. Cultural studies and humanities also receive fairly limited, if any attention from the universities.

Since most of the higher education in the city is provided by Petrozavodsk State University, and this university does provide a wide range of educational opportunities, it is quite difficult to pinpoint certain areas of study that represent the city best. However, factoring in the second university – a pedagogical institution – definitely makes education one of the most sought-after degrees in the area. There also seems to be a large variety of engineering studies. As a result, these two studies – engineering and education – are probably most prominent in Petrozavodsk.

Schools of Petrozavodsk

There are two main universities in Petrozavodsk. Other educational institutions exist for further and higher education, but they are highly specialized and typically employ limited enrollment. The following two universities are the most notable and representative of educational opportunities in Petrozavodsk.

  1. Petrozavodsk State University is the main public university within the city of Petrozavodsk. It offers a hugely diverse course set in areas of engineering, medicine, health, history, math, culture, science and many more. It has the largest and most diverse number of faculties of any school in Petrozavodsk.
  2. The Karelian State Pedagogical University concentrates on producing high-quality teachers in academic subjects like geology and history, while learning about psychology and child development. The school also provides extra-curricular activities and programs for international students.
