Singapore, known officially as the Republic of Singapore, is a sovereign city-state and island country situated in the southeast portion of the Asian continent.  The independent nation is located off the southern tip of the Malay Peninsula, roughly 85 miles (137 km) north of the equator.  Made up of the lozenge-shaped main island of Pulau Ujong (widely known as Singapore Island) and over 60 much smaller islets, Singapore is separated from Peninsular Malaysia by the Straits of Johor to its north and from Indonesia’s Riau Islands by the Singapore Strait to its south.  Singapore is highly urbanized, with very little of its native primary rainforest remaining.  Its territory has consistently expanded through land reclamation.

Singapore is organized as a unitary multiparty parliamentary republic with a Westminster system of unicameral parliamentary government. The People's Action Party has won every election since self-government in 1959.  Slightly over five million people call Singapore home, of which roughly 2 million are foreign-born residents.  Singapore is highly diverse: 75 percent of the population is made up of native Chinese, followed by significant minorities of Malays, Indians, Eurasians, and others. This diversity is reflected in the country's four official languages — English, Malay, Chinese, and Tamil — as well as in its official policies that promote multiculturalism.

Singapore is one of the world's leading commercial hubs, with the fourth-biggest financial center and one of the five busiest ports on the planet.  The country’s globalized and diversified economy depends heavily on trade, especially in manufacturing, which makes up about a quarter of Singapore's Gross Domestic Product (GDP). Part of the reason for the country’s success over the years has been its excellent system of higher education, especially in the technical and scientific disciplines.

Aeronautical Engineering Education in Singapore
Aeronautical Engineering is a highly advanced field of study that is offered as a degree program at a select few of Singapore’s universities.  The program is offered at both the undergraduate and graduate level, leading to Bachelor’s of Science and Master’s of Science degrees, respectively.

The field of aeronautical engineering is the branch of engineering that focuses on the research, design, development, construction, testing, science and technology of aircraft.  The field also deals with the aerodynamic characteristics of aircraft, including the various behaviors and related factors that come into play, including airfoil, control surfaces, lift and drag.  In recent years, aeronautical engineering has become one of two major and overlapping branches of aerospace engineering, with astronautical engineering being the second.

In Singapore, the degrees in aeronautical engineering are referred to as a BEng (Bachelor of Engineering) and MEng (Masters in Engineering). Aeronautical engineering degrees at the undergraduate level usually span four to five years, but many institutions allow students to progress directly into a Masters in Aeronautical Engineering, extending the course length by an additional two years.  In these cases, the same courses are offered for the first two to three years.

The Aeronautical Engineering programs at Singapore’s universities features instruction that is primarily lecture-based, with students also completing coursework and laboratory exercises, attending tutorials and participating in field trips. Group work and group design work may also be an element, with independent study expected in all degree programs, and assessment divided between examinations and coursework projects. Depending on the institution, students may also be treated to expert lectures and even experience rides in a flight simulator.
