A fascinating blend of religions and cultures, Albania offers an invaluable opportunity to see a seat of post-communist turbulence and flux up close. However, the education system is in shambles. After graduating from local high schools, Albanian students from the impoverished Presevo Valley have to fight hard to go to university. Opportunities for study are few and far between and the streets and cafes are packed with young people who have nothing to do.
Social life consists of walking about town. Residents dress up and walk in the circle in the center of town for an about an hour every night. In Muslim towns, women stay at home while the men meet friends, drink coffee, cognac or the Albanian liquor, raki, in cafes.
High incidence of organized crime and lack of adequate medical facilities make living in Albania difficult and unsafe. There are reports of violence in the media almost every day.
