A deeply traditional society, Algeria’s beauty is profound but can be restrictive to those used to more freedom in their personal lives. There are strict rules for many things especially for women, including how they must dress, what they are allowed to say, and how they can interact with member of the opposite sex. However, the people are warm and friendly and there is a good expatriate community, which can be helpful.

Less developed than many of the western countries, Algeria can prove too difficult for those who find certain comforts indispensable. The roads are in poor condition, taxis tend to speed, food and entertainment options are limited and cleanliness is not at its optimal. On the upside, living costs are not very high.

Knowing Arabic or French is useful as not many of the local people speak English.
