La Dolce Vita
Italy is a unique combination of many rare things. It is a modern country and one of the most industrialized nations in the world but everywhere there are signs of the great historical and cultural achievements that played a part in making it one of the greatest nations in the world. The Italian ethos combines knowledge, learning and religion with a sharp sense of the pleasures of life—food, wine, music and romance. For a student, Italy offers a glimpse into its many worlds, each one more fascinating than the other.
As a major center of philosophy, literature and science, Italy has always played an important role in European higher education. It is one of the four countries that first engaged to create the "European Area of Higher Education" (Sorbonne Declaration, May 1998), leading to the higher education reform known as "Bologna Process" (Bologna Declaration, June 1999) currently prevalent across Europe.
The country has around 90 institutes of higher education, including 47 state universities, several private universities and over 20 institutes of physical education. There are also two universities of Italian language and culture. Options for social activities will depend largely on where you study. The bigger cities and towns have more on offer but small towns often have very active student associations and a wider choice of outdoor activities.
