Study at the University of Michigan

The university was established in 1817, which was twenty years before Michigan became a state. Since then the University of Michigan has undergone a couple of changes, one of which is moving campus to Ann Arbor in 1837, and the other – changing its curriculum from a strictly classical one, to such including science and research.

The institution is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools, and is primarily known for putting an emphasis on teaching arts, sciences, and professions which are likely to require postgraduate as well as undergraduate study. The research activity of the university is considered to be ‘very high’, while the doctoral program offers degrees in social sciences, humanities, STEM fields, as well as professional degrees in medicine, law, and dentistry. In 2010, the majority of undergraduates were accepted in the School of Literature, Science, and Arts (62%), around 21% went into the College of Engineering, and the rest were spread among the business school, the School of Kinesiology, and the School of Music, Arts, and Dance.

The University of Michigan also depicts itself as a great promoter of diversity, and this involves the diversity of people, heritage, academic disciplines, and scholarly pursuits. It was ranked 29th in the 2011 U.S. News & World Report "National University Rankings", while in 1995 it was ranked third nationally by the National Research Council for the quality of its graduate programs.
