Community Service in LaBoca
Organization:Location:
GeoVisions Buenos Aires
Qualifications:
You will be working in the center helping with day-to-day duties as well as helping in the specific projects that the center operates.
Description:
Argentina is the eighth largest country on Earth and comprises almost the entire southern half of South America. Over this vast land you can find virtually every climate in the world. The country possesses some of the world’s tallest mountains including Mt. Aconcagua, which at 6,959 meters makes it the tallest peak in the Western Hemisphere. It is also home to expansive deserts and impressive waterfalls including one of the world’s natural wonders- the Iguazu Falls. The land ranges from wild remote areas in the southern Patagonia to the bustling metropolis of Buenos Aires in the north where more than one third of the country’s 32 million people call home. This community service program is located in the La Boca neighborhood of Buenos Aries. The organization you will be working with was founded in 1935 and it worked as a recreational center for Italian immigrants until 1990. In 1996, it was reopened as a social organization. The institution has a free access library where counseling and legal support are provided. The center also works with non-governmental organizations that carry out prevention campaigns against HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases; they provide guidance to women at risk through a Women’s Commission that works with Assistance Programs backed up by the local government. ...

Description:
Argentina is one of the most enchanting countries in South America. The country stretches from the Tropic of Capricorn in the North to the icy waters of Cape Horn. Between these extremes, the Andes tower above the Gran Chaco and the Pampas, home of the gaucho, before giving way to rugged Patagonia in the south. The incredible natural beauty lures hikers, skiers, mountain climbers, and other adventurers from all over the world while cosmopolitan Buenos Aires, one of the world's great capitals, attracts people looking for a 24 hour metropolis. Buenos Aires is often called the Paris of South America because of the European style architecture, cafes, boulevards, cultural venues, fine restaurants, and clubs. The people of Buenos Aires, called porteños, are known for their style and flair. They are as proud and as passionate as the tango, the dance they invented and continue today. Argentina is rich in natural resources, has a diversified industrial base, and an export-oriented agricultural sector. Historically, the country has had a large middle class, but a series of financial problems dating back to the 1970s destroyed a huge portion of the middle class. In 2002, Argentina's financial problems came to a head when the country defaulted on its foreign debt and devalued the peso. Since then, the Argentine economy has been making a comeback. Inflation and unemployment rates have been steadily decreasing. In 2002 57% of the population was below the poverty line. By the middle of 2005, the poverty rate had dropped to 38%. Argentina still has a long way to go before its economic recovery will be complete, but the country is making marked progress each year. ELI partners with several organizations in Buenos Aires to offer volunteer programs aiding at risk children and others affected by the financial crises. Of course, Buenos Aires can also be your doorway to the rest of Argentina. When it's summer in the Northern Hemisphere, you can be skiing in the Andes. Or maybe you'd like to discover the wine country, or the Pampas, the vast agricultural and ranching plains of Argentina, or the wilds of Tierra del Fuego and the rest of Patagonia. There are few destinations that can match what awaits you in Argentina. Volunteer opportunities change as new needs arise. We are constantly adding to our volunteer opportunities. If you have a specific interest, please ask us about possible options. We may be able to locate something to fit your request. Some current assignments include: Soup Kitchen: One of the first effects of the 2002 economic crisis was a dramatic surge in the number of malnourished children throughout Argentina. The government, Neighborhood groups, and charities responded by setting up hundreds of soup kitchens for the poor. Soup kitchens in Buenos Aires are the daily source of nutrition for thousands of people. Work at a soup kitchen involves preparing and serving the meals, interacting with those that come in for a meal, cleaning after the service and helping out with clothing and donation drives. Center for At-Risk Children: Homelessness and poverty are epidemics that affect many families in Argentina, including those living in the city of Buenos Aires. Instead of going to school, homeless children are often forced to sell goods on the streets and subways in order to buy food for themselves and their families. This means they do are exposed to drugs, disease and violence and never have the opportunity to go to school. By working at a center for homeless and at-risk children, you will contribute to the education of a child. Most children are aged 2 to 5. Volunteers will lead activities such as educational games, singing songs, reading books, and arts and crafts activities. ...

Organization:Location:
Projects Abroad Argentina Unquillo, Cordoba
Qualifications:
Please remember - we're not responsible for everything. If you choose to take part in one of our programs, we cannot allow for every eventuality. You will be choosing to travel far afield to places that can be both exotic and unpredictable. Lifestyles and conditions will be different from those you are used to - not necessarily worse but different.
