| A 5 day Orientation Course at Wildtracks on arrival in Belize provides the basic skills needed, and information on living and working in Belize, the rich wildlife, cultural awareness and general health and safety issues. More specific training is also given where necessary – covering maintenance activities and machete use, wildlife survey techniques, biodiversity and visitor monitoring, orientation and GPS use. |
| Description: |
Join a variety of research projects in a number of locations and National Parks around Belize. Placements of two months and upwards are available with Wildtracks (a conservation organization), the Belize Audubon Society and the Belize Institute of Archaeology. As a volunteer, you will be involved in practical conservation in national parks and archaeological sites, as well as research, education and maintenance tasks from fish, crocodile and manatee surveys to assessing jaguar populations and running environmental field courses. The program starts with a five day orientation course which will provide you with the basic skills needed at the placements, as well as information on living and working in Belize, cultural awareness and general health and safety issues.
No formal skills are required as each Volunteer will be supported by local project staff for the duration of their project. All Volunteers should be fit, flexible and have a keen interest in natural history. In stark contrast to Belize's lush landscape, close to one third of the country's population lives below the poverty line. Today's population of 266,000 is a blend of Maya, Mestizo, Creole, Mennonite, and Garifuna.
Belize struggles to develop its natural resources in a sustainable way, given the complicated dynamic of vast natural resources, widespread poverty, and intense international pressure to exploit their resources. Furthermore, limited education, inadequate health services, and a lack of productive job opportunities hinder Belizeans from escaping the challenges of a developing nation.
ProBelize's programmes are based in San Ignacio and the surrounding communities. San Ignacio, referred to locally as Cayo, is located 2 hours from Belize City along the Western Highway and is a tourist center. The town and the surrounding communities contain a diverse population of Creole, Maya and Mestizo. San Ignacio is also an attractive market town set among pleasant tropical hills. The friendly people of San Ignacio enable rich cultural exchanges and productive development projects....
