Volunteer in Santiago Chile - Volunteering Abroad Opportunities Santiago, situated in the central valley, on the Mapocho River, is the capital city of Chile. Santiago is an urban metropolis with over 5 million people yet it still retains a small town atmosphere especially downtown. Santiago is graced with a mix of colonial and modern architecture, tree-lined streets, several parks, distinctive neighborhoods, and an ample assortment of restaurants and shops. The city has a modern, secure and efficient metro system which makes traveling around the city easy and worry-free. Santiago’s central location makes it a convenient home base for trips to the north, south, and central coastal regions of Chile. A vibrant and exhilarating city, Santiago is a good place to explore and volunteer; study Spanish and immerse yourself in the Chilean culture. We offer the following programs in Santiago: (1- 4 week placements with optional start date) Social/Welfare Service: We have partnerships with local NGO's and private institutions that support the improvement of living conditions of children. Volunteers work at a local children’s home which doubles as an orphanage and day care. The children range in age from infancy to 12yrs old, some with mild handicaps. Volunteers assist the local staff with the basic needs such as feeding, bathing and clothing, as well arrange games and day trips with the kids. Basic Spanish is required, as well as a positive and flexible attitude. Education/Teaching: A recently stated goal of the Chilean Ministry of Education is that Chile must become a fully bilingual country. English is taught in all schools from the first to the twelfth grades. English teaching assistants will work closely with Chilean English teachers. We have teaching placements in several small (primary and secondary) schools in Santiago. Volunteers do not need previous teaching experience, although it would be helpful. Basic Spanish is required, as well as a positive and flexible attitude. Program Includes: Accommodation at a local Spanish colonial style guesthouse or homestay option. All meals included daily. Airport transfers on arrival and departure. Our local Project Coordinators will provide full day orientation with city tour with lunch, introduction and placement in a volunteer work project. Teaching in the Elqui Valley: Chile
Organization:Location:
MondoChallenge Chile La Serena
Qualifications:
Like all of our projects there is a minimum age requirement of 18. There is also a minimum time requirement of 10 weeks for these programmes. Basic knowledge of Spanish is essential, as very little English is spoken. But we can also organise classes in Chile, so this is a great chance to learn Spanish!
Description:
Looking at a map of Chile one feels a touch of amazement that so much can happen in this long, narrow strip of land, tucked between the towering Andes Mountains and the endless Pacific Ocean! We offer teaching projects in La Serena region about 450kms north of Santiago. The Elqui Valley is known for its artistic communities, grapes and spirit of tranquillity. The region is the major producer of Pisco, Chile's national grape drink. Our main teaching projects are in Pisco Elqui, Monte Grande and Paihuano. The region enjoys one of the nicest climates in the country as it hardly rains, but it can get cold in winter, particularly at night. 1. What projects are available in Chile? We work mainly in three primary schools, welcoming pupils aged from 4 to 14 in the villages of Monte Grande, Paihuano and Pisco Elqui. In addition there is currently a thrust to provide a voluntary English support service to all the schools in the Comuna, including the recently opened Liceo (secondary school) in Paihuano and 6 small, ‘rural’ schools, scattered along the valley. Volunteers help raise the level of English in the Comuna, as well as developing sports offered to kids. Support in information technology is appreciated and volunteers can also set up adult English classes. Other exciting projects have been organised according to volunteers' individual talents and interests. These have included a concert in Monte Grande, a marathon and a photographic exhibition of work done by children in Cochiguaz We are also looking for volunteers to be involved in vocational training to adults, including communication skills and basic computing classes....

While your mere presence is extremely helpful to the young women, you will also have duties that may include any or all of the following: helping with schoolwork, assisting the staff in organizing the girls’ study time, planning recreational activities and just spending time with and listening to the girls.
