Volunteer in Costa Rica with Tropical Adventures. We are a non-profit organization offering volunteer tour packages for individual travelers, families and groups interested in exploring the culture, contributing to the communities, learning the language and exploring the natural beauty of Costa Rica.
Just a few of our exciting projects include teaching English in a small mountain village in the Central Valley, working at an animal refuge center in Pacific Guanacaste and helping to save endangered species of sea turtles on the Caribbean Coast.
Our programs, which volunteers can start on any date, are a minimum of 1 week long. We are able to adapt and customize these programs to suit the volunteer’s personality and interests – it is possible to combine different volunteering projects and we can even arrange special tours.

Conservation volunteers work at Playa Ostional, about three and a half hours south of Liberia on the Pacific Coast. Here, you'll live on the edge of the beach, helping to protect the endangered sea turtles who return to these beaches each year to lay their precious eggs.
The laid-back life of Costa Rica is infectious and you will find it hard to leave. Spoilt for choice by the number of palm fringed beaches, the Pacific coast offers great spots for surfing, while the Caribbean coast is best for snorkeling and diving. The projects we offer in Costa Rica allow you to experience its true essence and you will really become a part of Costa Rican community life.
Description:
Our Teaching and Care & Community projects are based in the city of Liberia, in Northwestern Costa Rica. Liberia is four hours from the cosmopolitan capital of San José, less than two hours from the Nicaraguan border and one to two hours from an enviable choice of Pacific Beaches. With numerous national parks and volcanoes also within easy reach, Liberia is an excellent base for visiting many of Costa Rica's natural attractions....
Expedition members must be aware that because of the location of the expedition site, transport is only by motorized boats canoes and kayaks. For this reason all Expedition Members must be strong swimmers and be able to swim 300m fully clothed. At no stage will Expedition Members be allowed to swim in the sea as Tortuguero is well known for its strong rip tides.
Spanish is not essential for this expedition but a little Spanish would be of benefit as this would allow you to interact with the community members far more freely. However, Spanish lessons will be offered on the expedition, depending on interest. All expedition members should be physically fit as the environment is demanding due to the heat and humidity. You should also be enthusiastic, adventurous and have a good sense of humour. It is important to be self-starting throughout the project. All expedition members must be team players; adaptable and willing assist each other and the staff in the daily tasks.
Description:
This fascinating expedition offers individuals the opportunity to live and work in the beautiful and rich habitats of a Costa Rican Rainforest situated on the Caribbean Coast. These diverse habitats offer Expedition Members the chance to take part in exciting training programmes in preparation for life in the field on a variety of science and community projects.
Expedition members are based at a biological station which is surrounded by primary rainforest and sits on a flooded forest waterway, a short canoe paddle from the coast. A brief but intensive training period prepares expedition members for a variety of conservation and community support projects.
GVI's work is carried out in conjunction with national, international and independent partners. Apart from COTERC (The Canadian Organisation for Tropical Education and Rainforest Education), with whom the station is shared, GVI is working closely with the Ministry of Environment and Energy of Costa Rica (MINAE) to develop and sustain long term conservation of the Tortuguero area. This expedition plays a vital role in the development and management of long term wildlife conservation and community education programmes.
Expedition Aims:
This expedition focuses on the promotion of conservation in the Tortuguero area. Thus, to support the Ministry of Environment (MINAE) in their priorities on research and community development, below is a list of the projects GVI is currently working on:
1. Resident bird study
2. Marine turtle feasibility study (April - October)
3. Jaguar predation of marine turtles (March - December)
4. Tourist Impact assessment

All programs in Costa Rica require a working knowledge of Spanish. You can improve your skills when you arrive: the program includes one or two weeks of language training - your choice.
Description:
Costa Rica, one of the most popular destinations in Latin America, is a country of endless beauty that prides itself on the conservation efforts. With its spectacular coastline, its amazing biodiversity, and its rugged geography, which includes some very active volcanos, Costa Rica is well worth a visit. Costa Rica also has a long tradition of peace and democracy. In fact, in refreshing contrast to its neighbors, the country has no army. Although its economy is stronger and prices are higher than in most Latin American countries, there are still countless unmet needs. So the volunteer in search of an worthwhile project has much to choose from.
Our programs are based in Heredia, a university community in Costa Rica's Central Valley, about 7 miles from the capital, San Jose, near enough for day trips, but far enough to provide a more tranquil environment. Of course, as a university town, Heredia has plenty to see and do. Projects are scattered throughout Costa Rica, but you will spend your orientation/language training period in Heredia.
