Description:
Volunteer in La Ceiba - Volunteering Abroad Opportunities Our projects are located in La Ceiba, a picturesque town located on the northern coast of the Caribbean Sea. La Ceiba is well known as the gateway of Honduras. The city maintains a small town welcoming feel where the locals are generous and easy going. The area around the city is mountainous and lush with vegetation. La Ceiba is a young, lively town that beats to the rhythm of its Latin, Caribbean and Afro-Antillean culture. La Ceiba offers a lot of charm and hospitality, as it still slow on the major tourist developments. With its close proximity to Pico Bonito Natural Park, marine reserves and wildlife refuge, it has the potential to develop into a major ecotourism spot in Central America. La Ceiba has many restaurants, small shops, swaying palms and colonial architecture dotting its main streets. La Ceiba is famous for its Carnival week, which takes place during the Month of May to celebrate the patron saint, San Isidro. This is without doubt the largest and most important celebration held regularly in Central America. The wonderful climate and the hospitable people make La Ceiba a wonderful place to live and volunteer. Our programs provide you the chance to discover the wonders of Central America, while doing meaningful and rewarding community service work. This is a great opportunity to explore life in a coastal Caribbean town, live and work amongst the locals and realize one person can make a difference. We offer the following programs in La Ceiba: Childcare/Orphanage Assistance: Work in an orphanage or children’s center supporting the local orphans. Share your love and time with the needy children. Volunteers needed to teach basic conversational English and Computers. Other duties including organizing tram games, helping with homework, drawing, singing, kitchen and laundry help as well as basic upkeep such as sweeping, painting. Children range in age to babies to pre-teens. No prior experience required, having basic Spanish knowledge is helpful. Teaching Program: In La Ceiba there is a growing need for native English speakers to help students become a part of the growing hospitality industry. Volunteers teach English to children and young people attending primary and secondary schools in La Ceiba and its surrounding areas. These areas are very poor, and the schools lack native English-speaking volunteers. In this program, volunteers will help children learn the correct use of English words and master English grammar. A typical class averages about 30 students. You must have some knowledge of the Spanish language to successfully interact with them. Prior teaching experience not necessary. Medical Care: Unfortunately, the public health care system in Honduras is one of the worst in Latin America. In La Ceiba and the surrounding towns there are very few good hospitals and even most middle class families are unable to afford them. Therefore, able healthcare volunteers are needed to assist in local hospitals which are often poorly-equipped. Nursing and medical students and professionals will support local doctors and nurses in their work. Work task vary in different capacities from observing to providing assistance in surgery, based on your skills and experience. Also depending on your skill level, you may help care for patients, check blood pressure, distribute food, and work in the pharmacy or with a gynaecologist. *Medical volunteers must submit a copy of their credentials or nursing certificate, or university/medical school letter verifying enrollment. HIV/AIDS Awareness and Care: In recent years, Honduras has experienced a rapid increase in HIV infections, accounting for nearly 60 percent of all cases reported in Central America. Roughly 80 percent of all reported cases are attributable to heterosexual transmission, and studies indicate that between 1 and 4 percent of pregnant women have been infected with the virus. Volunteers in this project will be involved in various care and support activities. Volunteer activities will include counselling, including prevention counselling and the design and use of complementary IEC (information, education, and communication) materials; working in diagnosis and treatment of minor opportunistic infections and palliative care; referring patients in some cases to public or private sources of more sophisticated care, including the diagnosis and treatment of TB and sexually transmitted infections and anti-retroviral therapy, including prevention of mother-to-child transmission; and working in IEC activities to reduce the stigma of being HIV-positive and combat discrimination. An intermediate level of Spanish is required to participate in this project. Language & Cultural Immersion: Delve into a new language! We provide you the chance to fully immerse into Honduran culture and learn Spanish. Spanish is taught on a one on one student teacher ratio or up to three students per group, focusing in conversation practice, grammar, readings and the vocabulary according to the student level and needs. The program is based in 20 hours per week, 4 hours per day from Monday through Friday. Students at all levels are welcome. The school is located in the center of town, 4 blocks away from the ocean. You choose morning or afternoon classes, offered 7:30 a.m to 11:30 a.m. and from 1:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m. The remainder of your day you will volunteer at a local orphanage or school helping children learn English.
