The city is situated in Kathmandu Valley , along with the cities of Patan and Bhaktapur where our other volunteer programs are located. A visit to Kathmandu is like stepping back into the 12th century. Parts of this bustling city are very crowded and run down, and other areas are architecturally stunning and home to numerous notable Hindi and Buddhist temples, monkeys, and ancient buildings. Kathmandu is the gateway to the Himalayans and attracts hikers and climbers from around the world. There are numerous things to see and do around Kathmandu. Among the highlights are the Three Goddesses Temple, Durbar Square, Swayambhunath (Monkey Temple), Mahakala Temple, Pasupatinath and Bodhnath and shopping and bargaining around the touristy Thamel area. Lalitpur is said to be the most beautiful among the three royal cities alongside Kathmandu and Bhaktapur. The city is known for its finest tradition of arts and crafts and its rich cultural heritage. Most of the locals are engaged in various trades, especially in traditional handicraft and cottage industries. Lalitpur in fact is the only town in entire Nepal that has produced the highest number of most talented artists and finest craftsman ever recorded in Nepalese art history. As a volunteer, you will primarily assist with the daily care of the kids; including bathing, feeding and clothing. You can work with infants and toddlers, and also older school age children. Welcome to Tuhura Home Nepal Tuhura Home Nepal is a non-profit social welfare charitable trust dedicated to providing a safe place for under-privileged children to play and be educated, while also supporting the rural development of the village in which they live. We are a small organization with big goals and high ideals. We receive no financial support from the Nepalese Government and we are not affiliated with any political organizations. Our centre and associated development projects are funded solely by private donations. In order to expand and reach out to more children, and struggling families, we need your generous support either by volunteering, donating or sponsoring. Our childrens' day care centre is based in Ramkot, a traditional rural village 7km from the heart of Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal. The center consists of one building housing three classrooms, one separate building which functions as the kitchen and dining room, an open plan floor which we use for as an indoor play area during monsoon time, and a large garden for outdoor activities. At the moment our childrens' day care centre provides education, food and support for more than 400 children and employs a number of full and part time staff from the local village. Future projects include renovating the existing buildings, refurbishment of the kitchen and dining room, construction of new classrooms and the building a playground with basic play equiptment. Tuhura Home Nepal also works with local villagers supporting community projects and the development of the village infrastructure.
