Description:
Volunteer in Peru Lima - Volunteering Abroad Opportunities
Lima is the capital and largest city in Peru, home to about 30% of the countries population. The city is located in the valleys of the Chillón, Rímac and Lurín rivers and overlooks the coast of the Pacific Ocean. Lima, called the City of Kings, proudly preserve the colonial convents, mansions and several churches which are symbols of their ancient and noble traditions. Often overlooked by travelers, Lima is a sprawling metropolis known for friendly people, quality museums, important historical sites, and a variety of dining and entertainment establishments.
In spite of receiving thousands of tourists every year, Peru is the second poorest of the Andean countries. Lima houses around one-third of the Peruvian population, more than half who live under the poverty line. Many Peruvians l live in shantytowns, known locally as pueblos jóvenes (young towns). These areas often lack such basic services as electricity and running water. We offer orphanage and teaching placements throughout the city. With our volunteer program we allow you to discover the wonders of Lima, while doing meaningful community work. This is a great opportunity to enhance your Spanish knowledge, live with the locals and realize one person can make a difference.
We offer the following programs in Lima:
Social/Welfare Service: We support private institutions that improve the the lives of children. Volunteers work at a local children's home which doubles as an orphanage and day care. The children range in age from infancy to 12yrs old, some with mild handicaps. Volunteers assist the local staff with the basic needs such as feeding, bathing and clothing, as well arrange games and day trips with the kids. Teaching English, as well as manual labor (sweeping, painting, gardening) may be involved. Basic Spanish is required, as well as a positive and flexible attitude.
Education/Teaching: Volunteers can teach, or assist the local teacher with English classes. The kids vary in age and most do not have any proper schooling. By speaking English, new opportunities are available to the children that would otherwise be destined to stay in the cycle of poverty. Volunteers do not need previous teaching experience, although it would be helpful. Basic Spanish is required, as well as a positive and flexible attitude.
Medical/Healthcare: We have placements in small community clinics in Lima. These clinics offer basic medical attention such as check ups, dental and immunizations free of charge, so the need for volunteers is great. Volunteers assist the local staff in whatever capacity they may need, such as taking medical history, checking vitals, assisting with medicine and supplies. Volunteers must be in the medical fields and provide copies of their credentials. Volunteers must have an intermediate knowledge of Spanish. This is a great opportunity to gain first hand medical experience in a foreign country while donating your skills.
Program Includes: Homestay or local guesthouse or on-site volunteer accommodations at orphanage. Includes three meals a day. Airport transfers on arrival and departure. Our local Project Coordinators will provide orientation briefing and Lima city tour, half day Spanish lessons. Introduction and placement in a volunteer work project. *Additional Spanish classes can be arranged for you locally.
The project coordinator is available 24/7 in case of emergency, health-related or otherwise. They can assist in arranging sightseeing excursion before, during or after the volunteer program.

Volunteer Abroad in Cusco Peru: Volunteering Opportunities
Volunteer Abroad in Cusco: Cusco is considered the archaelogical capital of the Americas, and has been declared by UNESCO as a cultural Heritage of Humanity. Cusco maintains its Old World charm with beautiful plazas, cobbled streets and colonial style buildings lining the city. With its close proximity to Machu Picchu and other archaelogical wonders, Cusco has a wealth of treasures to offer a globally-minded traveler.
In spite of receiving thousands of tourists every year, Cusco also has one of the highest levels of poverty in the country. We offer orphanage and teaching placements throughout the city. With our volunteer program we allow you to discover the wonders of Cusco, while doing meaningful community work. Your love and support are the most important elements for these disadvantaged children. Depending on individual skills and interests, volunteers will act as mentors, lead arts and crafts, help children with their homework, lead children in songs and dance, and teach English.
Volunteer projects in orphanages are available in Cusco, Urubamba, Trujillo , Arequipa
Description:
Poverty, abuse, and alcoholism have left many children in Peru without families, depriving them of the parental love and care they need. Global Crossroad volunteer projects aspire to change the situation of these children by providing caring and nurturing volunteers to work and play with them. The orphanages in Peru support and protect these children, but most are under-funded and need all the help they can get. Your assistance helps keep these children off the street, and helps provide them with a happy and productive childhood.

Volunteers travel far and wide whether it be exploring a large chunk of South America or just seeing Peru. You may want to visit the Nazca Lines or see Lake Titicaca, the highest lake in the world. There are so many options open to you whether it be for a short weekend visit or as part of an extended trip.
Description:
With an extensive coastline, a vast area of Amazon rainforest - and the Andes, Peru gives you the opportunity to visit South America and see much of its character in one country: wildlife, beaches, historical sites and mountains.
Peru was shaped by the Incas and the Spanish. Hispanic and Amerindians live alongside each other and Spanish and Quechua are spoken in the markets of the Sacred Valley and Lima. The mysterious and magnificent Machu Picchu draws in tourists, archaeologists and historians alike. Inca ruins are everywhere.
Projects Abroad has its office in Urubamba in the heart of the Sacred Valley of the Incas. There are placements in many of the small towns in the Valley all keen to have volunteers working in their schools. Our Inca Projects are based three hours away in Huyro which is surrounded by newly discovered Inca remains. To visit our Rainforest project you need to take a half hour flight from Cusco to Puerto Maldonado followed by a two hour boat trip up the Madre de Dios river - a real adventure into the jungle.
Your home in Peru may be a house with a wall built by the Incas or you may share your garden with a troop of spider monkeys. You can sample local brews like Pisco Sour or Cusquena and you may even find yourself celebrating your birthday with Cuy (guinea pig) as the main dish!

In the Shelter the Orphans program, you will live in and help run an orphanage. The orphanage is located two hours from the city of Cusco in Limatambo. More than forty kids between the ages of seven and sixteen live there and other children from towns close to the area walk up to two hours to come to school. This place can be expressed as a small village. The complex is made up of dorms for the volunteers, homes for the "families", a school, a medical center, carpentry and a small farm. You will be able to help in every daily task and the orphanage would be happy to utilize any special skills you may have.

Description:
Over half of Peru's 25 million people live in poverty, making it one of the poorest countries in South America. Peru faces many troubling social and economic challenges including high unemployment and even higher underemployment. These conditions lead to poverty for many Peruvians, and make it difficult for the country to provide its citizens with basic health care, education, sanitation, and other social services.
Urubamba (Internship Base).
The town of Urubamba is situated next to the voluminous Rio Urubamba in the heart of the sacred valley. This peaceful and intriguing town is surrounded by both historic ruins and snowcapped Andean peaks. Nearly 18,000 people call Urubamba home and it serves as a central point and major market for the surrounding communities. While there are several indigenous communities that are a short distance away from the town of Urubamba, Urubamba itself offers several comfortable amenities such as hot water, electricity, restaurants, bars, and cafes. ...
You need to really enjoy working with children, be patient, determined, imaginative and compassionate! It is necessary to be independent as this project is quite isolated, being a good distance from Cusco and conditions are very basic. Also, the more Spanish you know, the better you will get on, as the children do not speak English.
Description:
Hatunsonqo (big heart in Quechua) is a centre for about 37 underpriviledged children. It is located in Pomacanchis, in the district of Acomayo, two hours away from the historical city of Cusco. PLEASE NOTE: Due to the nature of the project we need a minimum of 2 volunteers for the project to run. Please do not book your flights until your project has been confirmed.
You will get involved in a variety of activities during your time at Hatun Songo. These can include caring for the children by helping out with washing and supporting the children with personal hygiene, mealtimes, teaching the children English and leading workshops in arts and crafts, carpentry and music and general activities with the kids.
