The Algarve's sunny, unspoiled landscape is an excellent place to find much of the region's birdlife. However, most of your fieldwork will be conducted at night, on a rocky shore where storm petrels pass on their migration. These tiny birds are amazingly tame in the hand, once you attract them into mistnets using tape recordings of their calls. The daytime is yours to explore nearby natural areas and their wildlife, as well as Neolithic sites, Roman ruins, and Moorish castles. You may also want to observe regular bird-banding activities at the field site, offering close glimpses of a wide range of European birds. You'll make one boat trip to view storm petrels by daylight, and see dolphins, porpoises, and other sea life.
Description:
Research Mission:
Monitor the migration of Europe's most mysterious seabird to discover the impact of climate change.
Situation Report:
Algarve, Portugal — The southern tip of Portugal is renowned for its rich cultural history and brilliant sand beaches broken by rugged rocky headlands. What many people do not realize is that this is also a key site along one of nature's most spectacular migrations. Storm petrels, at 25 grams the weight of a sparrow, are Europe's smallest seabird. Yet they migrate thousands of miles between the coast of Namibia and the stormy North Sea. These tiny bundles of feathers can survive for 30 years or more in one of the most hostile environments in the world, roaming over massive waves and through violent storms. You can help Dr. Rob Thomas, Marcial Felgueiras, and Will Simonson learn about the ocean ecosystem from spirited storm petrels as they migrate north. ...
