To add a third dimension to this placement we also have links with the Forestry Department of Brasov County who deal with the local wildlife - whether it be the problem of bears coming into the city or concerns for the welfare of the local wolf population. Please let us know if you'd like to spend part of your placement working alongside them. This is a great way to see some of the stunning scenery on the doorstep of the town.
Description:
This placement is perfect if you are thinking of becoming a vet or veterinary nurse, or are already on a course. Based in a busy veterinary practice in Brasov, the English-speaking vets will be able to give you the breadth of their experience. Our Projects Abroad Romania staff will place you with a vet who will act as your daily supervisor. All the vets are keen for you to get involved - the more enthusiasm and interest you show the more opportunities they will give you.
The practice that we work with deals with a range of animals. The morning is general surgery where locals bring their pets to be treated. Inoculations are common and of course you'll see how the vets diagnose conditions and start to understand general veterinary procedure and codes of practice. You'll learn how to handle animals and reassure their owners.
In the afternoon the vet goes out to visit farms in the beautiful Transylvanian countryside. Here you will see a very different, older style of life, and a different side of veterinary practice. Farms are often small and the diagnosis and treatment of the livestock can mean the difference between wealth and poverty.

This is an eye-opening opportunity to learn about the historical evolution of a region rich in cultural character. You will spend some of your time exploring other Roman and Greek sites of interest along the scenic Danube and the Black Sea coast. At Halmyris, your team will help Zahariade and colleagues excavate sites such as the military barracks, the northwestern tower, and the area near the historic harbor. The latter, discovered by earlier Earthwatch teams, confirmed that Halmyris was a wealthy bishopric in the sixth century A.D., as literary sources had claimed. Exciting new discoveries are turning up every year, so be prepared to make your mark at this remarkable site. In your spare time, the Danube Delta also offers some of the best birdwatching in Europe.
Description:
Halmyris, Tulcea, Romania — Where the Danube River empties into the Black Sea lies the fertile Danube Delta, a crossroads of cultures for thousands of years. With a commanding position at the mouth of the Delta, the historic Roman fort at Halmyris gave the Romans undisputed control over a gateway to Asia. This scenic outpost served as a strategic Roman legionary base and naval port for 600 years. It was also a critical supply depot for Roman colonization and cultural exchange in the region. In all, Halmyris was occupied for 1,100 years, from the Iron Age to the Byzantine period, an astounding sweep of colorful history. You can help Dr. Mihail Zahariade find out how Romans accommodated local customs and introduced their own on this notable frontier of western civilization.

Volunteer in Romania
The Global Volunteer Network currently has volunteer opportunities available through our partner organization in Romania. Volunteers have the opportunity to join a Christian Mission which cares for disabled orphans. There are four group homes, and volunteers will work with orphans aged from ten year old children to young adults. The children have suffered so much at a young age, but with your help they will see a brighter future.
To view some photos of the children click here.
.: The Program
Each home is run like a family unit, where volunteers will act as a mother, father, brother, or sister. There are opportunities to teach, counsel and help with feeding, cooking and cleaning, depending on your skills and experiences. There is a huge focus on the children having FUN, being happy and enjoying the rest of their lives. This is in real contrast to the devastating conditions they have experienced in the state run institutions.
The minimum age for this program is 21. If this excludes you then you may be interested in our other orphanage programs in Nepal, Russia or Vietnam, or in one of the other programs listed above.
.: Program Location
The group homes are located in Galati district which is about 150 miles from Bucharest (a 3 1/2 hour drive by car). You will be transported to and from the airport by the program coordinators.
