| Description: |
While in El Salvador you will stay with a host family near your placement. Volunteers are required to start at the beginning of the month, and have the opportunity to participate in the areas listed below. The projects are listed below are examples; our partner will often offer you different placements to choose between:
Teaching English: Teach in public schools, community centres of infantile development, or in marginal or rural communities. Some of the projects include working with disadvantaged children who work in the markets, or children who work in rubbish pits collecting objects to recycle and sell. These children have suffered abuse, and are sometimes aggressive to other children or adults. Volunteers are required to plan lessons, and teaching English through a topic that the children are familiar with is recommended. Other activities include preparing teaching aids such as flash cards and games, running arts and crafts, and planning games to help the children improve their social skills.
Another program allows volunteers to teach in the Walter Thilo Daninger School. There are 69 teachers who teach an average 1470 students between the months of January and October, with around 35 students in each class. The children are from 1st grade to 9th grade and most of the children come from disadvantaged families. Volunteers are needed to improve the children's level of English and assist in recreational and cultural activities with the children and teachers. Volunteers will teaching English to the students, and will also have the opportunity to participate in sports, recreational and cultural activities.
Community Maintenance: Take part in a range of manual work projects, allocated based on where the need is and on the volunteer's experience. Examples of potential projects include construction projects in schools, water projects and other physical activities. Previous volunteers in the project have helped to develop an income generating project in an orphanage, allowing the orphanage to sell plants to help them become sustainable.
Orphanage: Help in programs with children and teenagers developing different aspects of hygiene, education, and recreation. The orphanage project offers children a home atmosphere with substitute parents, where children are nurtured physically, emotionally and psychologically. There are currently one hundred children living in the three homes, although ten homes are planned for 2006. Volunteer activities include teaching English, cultural activities, recreation activities, cleaning, and construction.
Teaching English and Computing at San Fernando: San Fernando is a little town in the mountains of El Salvador with a population of about one thousand (very friendly) people, and lots of dogs and chickens. The center contains 8 computers, a scanner, a printer, and facilities for connection to the internet, which were donated by a company from the United States. Most of the students are between 8 and 15, although there are a few adults that come as well. The level of English and computing taught is very basic - most of the students are beginners, so as long as you have an idea of the basics in Microsoft Word you should be fine. The conditions in this placement are more rural and basic than the other placements. ...
