Some of the orphanages open only in the afternoon after a normal school schedule. In these particular orphanages, volunteers will teach in the regular schools the orphans attend and later work in the orphanage with the children after normal school hours.
Description:
To those in the west, an orphanage can seem a sad place, but for some South African children, an orphanage provides a refuge from the harsh conditions of the streets. It is a place where they can laugh, learn, and grow—an opportunity to experience the childhood they never really had before they entered the orphanage. Global Crossroad’s volunteers offer education, compassion, and friendship these children lacked while living on the streets.
The exact job responsibilities of orphanage volunteers in South Africa depend on the needs of the individual orphanage as well as the skills and interests of the volunteers. Volunteers usually teach basic English to the children and also help to develop creative programs such as art, music, dance, and sports. Volunteers may be asked to accompany the children on day trips and help with sanitation, cooking, and administration.
