Whether you\u2019re on a gap year or just your summer holidays, it\u2019s time you ventured into the heart of Europe and discovered its joys for yourself. Here are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thomson.co.uk\/holidays\/\">five places to start<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Barcelona<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The Catalan capital is one of Europe\u2019s most glittering jewels. With world-class architecture adorning its wide avenues and city squares, sites like Antoni Gaud\u00ed\u2019s Sagrada Familia and La Pedrera continue to attract visitors from all over. If you fancy something else beyond gazing up at the buildings, why not take a trip down famed thoroughfare Las Ramblas, or take a walk up Montjuic hill for the majestic views below. With cheaper beer than anywhere in north or western Europe, the Czech\u2019s are certainly proud of their lager. If you\u2019re not in the mood for a glass or two, take in some of the gothic sites like the St Vitus Cathedral or the 14th century Charles Bridge. The combination of architecture, food, romance, and culture results in a city without compare. While it isn\u2019t the cheapest, it is one of Europe\u2019s most rewarding destinations.
