This post gives an overview for students and visitors: where people go out in Madrid, Barcelona, Seville, Málaga and the Balearic Islands, a few venues that could be checked on official pages in October 2026, and how to get home afterwards.

How a night out works

An evening usually begins with tapas or a drink on a terrace and moves on to bars with music. Clubs fill up after midnight. The opening times published by the venues in this post show the pattern: a Madrid music bar that closes at 3:00 or 3:30, a Barcelona club with DJ sessions from midnight to 6:00, and a large club outside Madrid that stays open until 6:00.

Venues change often. Several places named in older versions of this post could not be confirmed and have been left out, so check a club’s own website or the city’s tourism site before making plans.

Madrid

Madrid’s tourism website lists ten nightlife areas, each with its own character. Among them:

Malasaña: the home of the 1980s “Movida” and still the area for rock, indie and pop bars, a short distance from Gran Vía

Chueca: the main LGTBIQA+ district, with bars and clubs side by side

Barrio de las Letras (Huertas): busy every day of the week, with something for every age and taste

La Latina: known for tapas during the day and lively at night

Lavapiés: reggae, hip-hop, rock and flamenco in the city’s most international district

Sol and Gran Vía: central bars and clubs around the two best-known addresses in the city

Tupperware

Tupperware is a two-floor bar at Corredera Alta de San Pablo, 26, in Malasaña. It is known for its 1980s decoration and for a large mural by Mauro Entrialgo on the back wall of the ground floor, which shows figures from the neighbourhood’s indie and rock scene. The tourism website lists it among the classics of the area and gives its hours as 20:00 to 3:00 from Sunday to Thursday and 20:00 to 3:30 on Fridays and Saturdays. The nearest metro stations are Tribunal and Bilbao.

Fabrik

Fabrik opened in 2003 in Humanes de Madrid, outside the city (Avenida de la Industria, 82). It is a large electronic music club with a main floor, a terrace with its own dance area and seven bars. According to the tourism website it opens on Saturdays, between 18:00 and 22:00 depending on the event, and closes at 6:00. A shuttle bus runs while the club is open, from the Temple of Debod in Madrid and from Fuenlabrada train station.

Getting home in Madrid

The metro runs from 6:00 to 1:30. After 23:30 the city runs night buses, called búhos (owls). There are 27 lines, N1 to N27, and all of them start or end in Plaza de Cibeles. They run every 35 minutes from Sunday to Friday and every 15 to 20 minutes on Saturdays and the nights before public holidays, at the same fare as daytime buses.

Barcelona

Barcelona’s tourism website groups its nightlife into cocktail bars, live music venues and clubs. Its list includes Razzmatazz, a concert hall and club with five rooms; Sala Apolo, one of the city’s oldest concert halls and nightclubs; Jamboree, a jazz club under the arches of Plaça Reial; and Opium, a nightclub and restaurant on the seafront.

Marula Café

Marula Café, at Carrer dels Escudellers, 49, in the Gothic Quarter, has been open since 2011. It programmes funk, soul, disco, jazz, afrobeat, hip-hop and Latin music, with concerts and jam sessions early in the night and DJ sessions afterwards. According to the club’s information page it opens every day: on Wednesdays and Thursdays from 22:30 to 5:00, and on Fridays and Saturdays with concerts from 22:00 and DJ sessions from midnight to 6:00.

The DJ session costs €9 with a beer on Sundays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. On Fridays, Saturdays and the nights before public holidays entry is free from 0:00 to 0:30 and €13 with a drink after that, sold only at the door.

The W Barcelona hotel

The Eclipse bar described in the earlier version of this post no longer appears on the hotel’s dining page. The venue on the 26th floor is now NOXE, a Japanese restaurant with a cocktail bar and club. The hotel states a formal dress code for it.

Getting home in Barcelona

The metro usually runs from 5:00 to midnight. On Fridays and the nights before public holidays it runs until 2:00, and from Saturday morning it runs without a break until midnight on Sunday. The night buses (NitBus) almost all start or stop at Plaça de Catalunya or close to it.

Seville and Málaga

In Seville the evening centres on tapas and flamenco. Spain’s official tourism website names the Alameda, Macarena, Nervión, Los Remedios and Triana as popular areas for tapas, and flamenco can be seen in tablaos and in neighbourhood peñas. The metro line runs until 2:00 on Fridays, Saturdays and the nights before public holidays, and until 23:00 on other days.

Málaga combines tapas bars with newer areas such as the Soho district and the redeveloped port. Its metro runs until 1:30 on Fridays, Saturdays and the nights before public holidays, and there are four night lines between about midnight and 6:00.

Ibiza and Mallorca

Ibiza is the best-known club destination in Spain. Spain’s tourism website describes how the quiet, historic side of Ibiza town exists alongside a night scene with some of the most famous clubs in the world. The season and the line-ups change every year, so look at each club’s own calendar before booking a trip. In Palma de Mallorca, city buses usually stop at 23:00, but there is a night bus service.

Tips for students

Check the venue’s own agenda on the day: opening times and prices depend on the event.

Carry some cash. Some clubs sell entry only at the door, and Marula Café, for example, takes only cash for jam sessions and concerts paid at the ticket desk.

Plan the way home before you go out, using the night bus and late metro times above.

Live music, jam sessions and tapas bars are an easy way to meet people and practise Spanish.

More about the two largest student cities is on the Madrid and Barcelona city pages, and the full list of schools in Spain shows where courses are offered.

Nightlife in Spain for students: going-out areas and
