It sits on a wide plain, which gave it its Arabic name, Al-Basit (“the Plain”). The city is known for its knife-making tradition and for its September fair. This post covers the main sights, the two museums worth a visit with their 2026 opening hours, the fair, and what to eat.

The cathedral and the old centre

The Cathedral of San Juan Bautista stands on Plaza de la Virgen de los Llanos, in the oldest part of the city. Work began in the early 16th century over an earlier church of San Juan, and part of it was remodelled in Renaissance style by Diego de Siloé. Building went on for some four hundred years, and the main front is modern Neo-Gothic. Inside, look for the four large Renaissance columns, the Gothic chapels with star vaults, and the Chapel of the Virgen de los Llanos, whose 16th-century altarpiece is attributed to the Master of Albacete.

Other buildings in the centre worth a look:

Old monastery of the Encarnación (16th century), now an arts centre.

Posada del Rosario, an inn that mixes Gothic, Mudejar and Renaissance styles. It is a declared National Historic-Artistic Monument and houses the Tourist Office.

Casa Perona and Casa de los Picos, two houses with coats of arms on their fronts.

Pasaje de Lodares, a shopping arcade from the early 20th century with an iron and glass roof and Renaissance-style columns, the best-known Modernist building in the city.

Museo de Albacete

The Museo de Albacete is in the Abelardo Sánchez park. Its present building, by the architect Antonio Escario, opened in 1978. Nine rooms cover the archaeology of the province, from prehistory to a large group of Iberian sculpture dated between the 6th and 1st centuries BC. The Roman section includes mosaics and a rare collection of Roman dolls. The fine arts rooms show the paintings donated by Benjamín Palencia, and the stone Cruz de término de Albacete closes the archaeology route.

Winter hours (18 September to 30 June): Tuesday to Saturday 10:00 to 14:00 and 16:30 to 19:00; Sundays and public holidays 9:30 to 14:00.

Summer hours (1 July to 17 September): Tuesday to Saturday 10:00 to 14:00; Sundays and public holidays 9:30 to 14:00.

Closed: Mondays, 1 January, Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and 25 December.

Price: the museum’s page states in 2026 that entry is temporarily free. The standard general ticket is 3 euros, and students aged 18 to 26 are on the free list.

The Cutlery Museum

Albacete is known for its knives, folding knives (navajas) and scissors, and craft shops selling them are found around Calle Ancha. The Museo Municipal de la Cuchillería tells that story on Plaza de la Catedral, opposite the cathedral. It occupies the Casa de Hortelano, a house with an eclectic Gothic-style front and green tiles, commissioned in 1912 from the municipal architect Daniel Rubio.

October to May: Tuesday to Saturday 10:00 to 14:00 and 17:00 to 20:00; Sundays and public holidays 10:00 to 14:00.

June to September: Tuesday to Saturday 10:00 to 14:00 and 17:30 to 20:30; Sundays and public holidays 10:00 to 14:00.

Closed: Mondays, except the Mondays of the fair.

Price: €3 general, €1 for students, free for under-18s and for everyone on Wednesdays.

The September fair and Holy Week

The Feria de Albacete is a Festivity of International Tourist Interest. It lasts ten days in September, from the 7th to the 17th, and is held in honour of the Virgen de los Llanos, the city’s patron saint. It began as a livestock fair. It opens with a long parade of floats, bands and people in traditional Manchego dress, followed by a floral offering to the patron saint. The centre of the fair is the 18th-century fairground, known as the “frying pan” because of its shape: three concentric rings reached by a long walkway. Stalls sell food, drink and local crafts until dawn, and many serve cider with miguelitos, a local sweet.

Holy Week in Albacete is a Festivity of National Tourist Interest, with processions that carry religious sculptures.

Food and day trips

Local dishes include gazpacho manchego (described by Spain’s tourism website as a soup with fried tomatoes, garlic and special crackers), pickled partridge, orza pork loin and snails. Plaza del Altozano is a common starting point for a round of bars.

The province offers several day trips: the hill towns of Chinchilla and Almansa, the Lagunas de Ruidera nature reserve, the Sierra de Alcaraz with the source of the river Mundo, and the archaeological site of Tolmo de Minateda.

For students

The low or free museum prices suit a student budget, and Spain’s tourism website names September, the month of the fair, as the best time to visit. For places to study, see the list of universities in Spain and all schools in Spain.
