King Philip II had it built in the 16th century as a monastery, a royal palace and a burial place for his family. This post explains its history, describes the parts that most visitors see and gives the opening hours, prices and transport, checked in October 2026.

Why Philip II built it

According to the town’s tourist office, Philip II set out his reasons in a letter of 16 April 1561 to the general of the Hieronymite order. He wished to give thanks for the victory at Saint-Quentin, won on Saint Lawrence’s day in 1557, and to build a mausoleum for his parents and for himself, dedicated to Saint Lawrence.

Work began in 1563 under the architect Juan Bautista de Toledo. He died in 1567 and his pupil Juan de Herrera took over. Herrera changed the earlier project and finished the building in 1584. His plain, geometric manner, with very little decoration, became known as the Herrerian style and was copied in Spain for a long time afterwards.

The monastery was declared a Historic-Artistic Monument in 1931. On 2 November 1984 UNESCO placed the Monastery and Site of El Escorial on the World Heritage List.

The building

The monastery is built of granite. Spain’s official tourism website describes a tower 55 metres high at each of the four corners, and counts 15 cloisters, 86 staircases and 88 fountains in the complex. The main façade faces west. Its central doorway, set between six Doric columns, carries the coat of arms of Philip II and a large granite statue of Saint Lawrence by Juan Bautista Monegro. The two side doors lead to a school and to the Augustinian convent that occupies part of the building today.

What to see

Patio de Reyes and the basilica

The main door opens onto the Patio de Reyes (Kings’ Courtyard), which leads to the basilica. The church has a Greek cross plan. In the main chapel are the funerary monuments of Charles V and Philip II. The basilica does not require a ticket, but it is closed to visitors during religious services.

The royal pantheons

Philip II intended the monastery as the pantheon of his family. The visit includes the Panteón de Reyes (Pantheon of the Kings) and the Panteón de Infantes (Pantheon of the Princes), together with the palaces and the chapter rooms.

The library

Philip II founded the library as a large Renaissance library. Patrimonio Nacional, the public body that manages the monastery, states that it holds up to 40,000 volumes and 600 incunabula, and is especially rich in printed editions of the 15th and 16th centuries. The main hall has frescoes on the vault and bookcases designed by Juan de Herrera.

The Painting and Architecture Museums

The two museums inside the monastery reopened in 2026 after ten years of renovation work. The Museum of Painting shows around a hundred works by painters such as Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese, Van der Weyden and José de Ribera. Both museums can be visited free of charge, without the general ticket, until 31 December 2026.

Opening hours and tickets

The official ticket page of Patrimonio Nacional gives these details for 2026:

Winter (October to March): Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 am to 6:00 pm

Summer (April to September): Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 am to 7:00 pm

Closed on Mondays; the ticket office and entry close one hour and fifteen minutes before closing time

Standard ticket €14; reduced ticket €7 for visitors aged 5 to 16, visitors aged 65 and over, and students up to 25 with a valid student card

Guided tours cost €8 extra and last about two hours; there is one tour in English, at 10:45 am

Tickets must be bought in advance, online or at the visitor reception centre opposite the north façade. On Wednesdays and Sundays from 3:00 pm admission is free for citizens of the European Union and of Latin American countries, and for residents, at the ticket office only.

Getting there from Madrid

Bus lines 661 and 664 run from the Moncloa interchange in Madrid to San Lorenzo de El Escorial. By train, the Cercanías commuter network reaches the station of El Escorial, in the neighbouring town below. The tourist office names line C-3a; urban bus L1 links the station with San Lorenzo. By car, the route is the A-6 motorway to exit 29 and then the M-505.

The tourist office’s World Heritage walk around the monastery takes 45 minutes without the gardens. A guided tour of the interior lasts about two hours.

For students

El Escorial is an easy day trip for anyone studying in Madrid, and students up to 25 pay half price. The town also has a university centre, the Real Centro Universitario Escorial-María Cristina, in one of the 16th-century service buildings.
