This post describes five that can be visited today: the Real Alcázar of Seville, Loarre Castle in Huesca, the Alcázar of Segovia, Cardona Castle in Catalonia and the Alcázar of Toledo. For each one it gives a short history and the practical details published by the monument itself, checked in October 2026.

Real Alcázar of Seville

The Real Alcázar is a group of palaces rather than a single castle. Its official website traces it back to 913, when the Caliph of Córdoba, Abd al-Rahman III, ordered a new seat of government to be built on the southern side of the city. The Almohads added more buildings in the 12th century. After the Castilian conquest of 1248-49 it became a seat of the Crown, which it still is. Alfonso X built the Gothic Palace, and in the middle of the 14th century Pedro I built the Mudéjar Palace. The Alcázar has been a World Heritage Site since 1987.

The visitor page gives the hours: from 1 October to 31 March, 09:30 to 17:00; from 1 April to 30 September, 09:30 to 19:00, every day of the week. It closes on 1 and 6 January, Good Friday and 25 December. General admission costs €15.50. The reduced ticket costs €8.00 and applies to students aged 14 to 30 and visitors over 65. More about the city is in the post on Seville.

Loarre Castle, Huesca

Loarre is a Romanesque fortress in the province of Huesca, in Aragon. According to its official website, it was built at the beginning of the 11th century by order of King Sancho III of Pamplona and enlarged at the end of the same century by his grandson Sancho Ramírez, King of Aragon. The plan is irregular, and the outer wall has towers that are mostly semicircular. Inside is the Romanesque church of San Pedro, with a dome and carved capitals. Spain’s tourism website notes that the castle was first a royal residence and later an Augustinian monastery.

The castle’s website lists three timetables:

1 November to 28 February: 11:00 to 17:30, closed on Mondays except public holidays

1 March to 15 June and 16 September to 31 October: every day from 10:00 to 19:00

16 June to 15 September: every day from 10:00 to 20:00

The castle is closed on 25 December and 1 January.

Alcázar of Segovia

The Alcázar of Segovia rises on a rock above the meeting point of the Eresma and Clamores valleys. The words “castle of Segovia” and “Alcaçar” first appear in documents between 1124 and 1139. It was a residence of the kings of Castile; Isabella the Catholic left from here on 13 December 1474 to be proclaimed queen. In 1764 Charles III founded the Royal College of Artillery in the building. A fire on 6 March 1862 destroyed the roofs and the interior. It is not a military academy today: visitors see the palace rooms, an artillery museum and the Tower of Juan II, and the building also holds the General Military Archive, installed in 1898.

According to the Alcázar’s website, it opens from 10:00 to 18:00 between 1 November and 31 March and from 10:00 to 19:30 between 1 April and 31 October. The palace and museum take 40 to 45 minutes. The tower has 152 steps on a spiral staircase. Tickets often sell out at weekends, so buying online beforehand is advised. Segovia is about 80 km from Madrid; see the post on Segovia.

Cardona Castle, Catalonia

Cardona Castle stands on a hill above the town of Cardona, in the province of Barcelona. In the Middle Ages it was the residence of the Lords of Cardona. The complex includes the Collegiate Church of Sant Vicenç, a work of Catalan Lombard Romanesque architecture, and the Torre de la Minyona (Maid’s Tower), which remains from the old castle of the counts. Part of the castle is now a state-run Parador hotel.

The town’s tourism foundation runs guided tours from Tuesday to Sunday and on holidays. A tour lasts about 1 hour 30 minutes and costs €8.75 for adults. There is a free car park next to the castle, and the last stretch is on foot.

Alcázar of Toledo

Spain’s tourism website dates the first construction on the site to Roman times. It was rebuilt under Alfonso VI and Alfonso X as a square fortress with towers at the corners, and again under Emperor Charles V by the architect Alonso de Covarrubias; Juan de Herrera worked on it later. Today it houses the Museo del Ejército (Army Museum) and, on the upper floor, the Regional Library of Castilla-La Mancha.

The Army Museum opens from 10:00 to 17:00, with last entry at 16:30, and closes on Mondays. The general ticket for the permanent exhibition costs €5.00, and entry is free every Wednesday. Other posts describe the Alcázar and the Army Museum in more detail.

For students

The Alcázar of Seville has a reduced ticket for students aged 14 to 30, and the Army Museum in Toledo is free on Wednesdays. Proof of age or a student card is needed at the entrance. The city pages list the schools in each place.

Five castles in Spain to visit: the Alcázar of
