The Planetario de Madrid is the city’s public planetarium, in the Enrique Tierno Galv\u00e1n park south of the centre. It shows full-dome films about astronomy, has free exhibition areas, and runs talks, courses and telescope evenings. This post covers what it offers and the opening times, prices and transport for 2026.<\/p>\n

What it is<\/h2>\n

The planetarium opened on 29 September 1986 and belongs to Madrid City Council’s culture department. Its purpose is to spread knowledge of astronomy and science among schoolchildren and the general public. In 2016 and 2017 the building, its exhibitions and its technology were thoroughly renewed under an agreement between the council and the “la Caixa” foundation, and it reopened in 2017.<\/p>\n

The address is Avenida del Planetario, 16, in the Arganzuela district. The Tierno Galv\u00e1n park around it is one of the larger parks in the city and lies close to Madrid R\u00edo.<\/p>\n

The projection room<\/h2>\n

The main attraction is the domed projection room. A full-dome video system fills the whole ceiling and places the audience inside the scene, and a Megastar2 planetarium projector shows the night sky live. According to the city council, the shows last about 30 minutes each and are replaced with new ones from time to time.<\/p>\n

There are two basic programmes: one for the summer and school holidays, and one for the school year. During the school year, the morning sessions on school days are reserved for school groups, so individual visitors should plan for an afternoon or a weekend. Seats are not numbered.<\/p>\n

Exhibitions and activities<\/h2>\n

Entry to the exhibitions is free. The council lists four exhibition areas on two floors, including the Sala de Astr\u00f3nomos on the lower floor and the two entrance halls, plus an audiovisual area with a large screen. In autumn 2026 the temporary exhibition is “Artemisa: la magia de la Luna”, on show until 27 December.<\/p>\n

The planetarium also organises workshops, an astronomy and astrophysics course, lecture series and public observation days with telescopes. A shop and bookshop on the street floor sells teaching materials, gifts and books on astronomy. The building is accessible to people with reduced mobility and has an induction loop, and there is a wifi area.<\/p>\n
