It brings together a contemporary art museum, exhibition halls, a theatre, an auditorium, the city archives and four libraries. This post describes the building, what is inside, and the opening hours and transport in 2026.<\/p>\n<h2>From barracks to cultural centre<\/h2>\n<p>The building was put up in the early 18th century, during the reign of Philip V, as a barracks for the Royal Corps guards. Its architect was Pedro de Ribera, and the Madrid tourist board describes it as an example of Madrid baroque architecture. The complex covers almost 60,000 square metres and is easy to recognise by its long pink fa\u00e7ade.<\/p>\n<p>A fire in 1869 destroyed part of the complex. The building was declared a Historical-Artistic Monument in 1976, which saved it from demolition. Madrid City Council later bought it and turned it into a cultural centre. The full refurbishment was completed in 2011 and restored original features such as the exposed brick.<\/p>\n<p>Conde Duque is one of three large cultural venues run by the city council. The other two are Matadero Madrid, a former slaughterhouse, and CentroCentro, in the city hall building.<\/p>\n<h2>What is inside<\/h2>\n<p>Several separate institutions share the building:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Contempor\u00e1nea Condeduque<\/strong>, the arts centre run by the municipal company Madrid Destino. It programmes theatre, dance, music, visual arts, science and literature, and uses the theatre, the auditorium, the conference hall, the Sala de B\u00f3vedas (Hall of Vaults), rehearsal rooms and the south and central courtyards. The auditorium is used for music and has 260 seats.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Museo de Arte Contempor\u00e1neo<\/strong>, which shows part of the modern art collections owned by the city council in two rooms. The collection is mainly painting and graphic work, with sculpture, photography and drawing, from the early avant-garde to the present. The museum also holds a reconstruction of the study of the writer Ram\u00f3n G\u00f3mez de la Serna (Madrid, 1888 \u2013 Buenos Aires, 1963).<\/li>\n<li><strong>Archivo de la Villa<\/strong>, the city archives, and the <strong>Hemeroteca Municipal<\/strong>, the city newspaper library.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Four libraries<\/strong>: the Biblioteca P\u00fablica Benito P\u00e9rez Gald\u00f3s, the Biblioteca Hist\u00f3rica Municipal, the Biblioteca Musical V\u00edctor Espin\u00f3s and the digital library Memoriademadrid.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Exhibition halls<\/strong> for temporary shows.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Opening hours and prices in 2026<\/h2>\n<p>The centre is open from Monday to Saturday from 9:00 to 21:00, and on Sundays and public holidays from 10:30 to 14:00. It is closed on 24, 25 and 31 December and on 1 January.<\/p>\n<p>The exhibition halls open from Tuesday to Saturday from 10:00 to 14:00 and from 17:30 to 21:00, and on Sundays and public holidays from 10:30 to 14:00. They are closed every Monday. In summer, from 15 June to 21 September, the halls close at 13:30 in the morning and at 20:00 in the evening.<\/p>\n<p>The Museo de Arte Contempor\u00e1neo is free. In winter it opens from Tuesday to Friday from 10am to 2pm and from 3pm to 9pm, and on Sundays and holidays from 10:30am to 2:30pm. On Saturdays it has a morning and an evening session. It is closed on Mondays and on 1 and 6 January, 1 May and 25 December.<\/p>\n<p>Walking into the courtyards and the exhibitions costs nothing. Performances and concerts are another matter: most are ticketed, and tickets are sold online through the Madrid Destino shop or at the box office, which opens from Tuesday to Friday from 17:30 to 20:30 and one hour before the performance at weekends. Reduced tickets are available for holders of the Carn\u00e9 Joven, people over 65, children under 14, large families, unemployed people and people with disabilities.<\/p>\n<p>Pets are not allowed in the building.<\/p>\n<h2>How to get there<\/h2>\n<p>The address is Calle del Conde Duque, 9 and 11. The nearest metro stations are Noviciado (line 2), Plaza de Espa\u00f1a (lines 2, 3 and 10), San Bernardo (lines 2 and 4) and Ventura Rodr\u00edguez (line 3). City buses 1, 2, 21, 44, 74, 133 and 138 stop nearby, and there is a BiciMAD dock at Calle del Conde Duque, 22.<\/p>\n<p>The centre is in the Universidad neighbourhood, better known as Malasa\u00f1a, which is bounded by Calle de la Princesa, Gran V\u00eda, Fuencarral, Carranza and Alberto Aguilera. The Palacio de Liria and the Museo ABC are close by, and <a href=\"\/articles\/plaza-de-espana-y-monumento-cervantes-madrid-spain\/\">Plaza de Espa\u00f1a<\/a> is a short walk away.<\/p>\n<h2>For students<\/h2>\n<p>Conde Duque is a practical place for students as well as a sight. The exhibitions and the museum are free, the libraries are public, and the 2026-27 programme of theatre, music and talks runs from October to June.
