It belongs to the Museo Reina Sofía, which uses it for free art installations. This post covers its history and architecture, the restoration that keeps the interior closed in 2026, and what can be seen in the meantime.

Closed for restoration in 2026

The building cannot be entered at present. The Museo Reina Sofía states that the Palacio de Cristal is temporarily closed for architectural improvements, and Madrid’s official tourism website lists it as closed for renovation works until 2027. No reopening day has been published, so check the museum’s visit page before planning around it.

The exterior is still worth the walk. The tarpaulin that covers the palace during the works carries an art commission. The second of these interventions, “Bundle” by the Peruvian artist Andrea Canepa (Lima, 1980), runs from 13 January 2026 to 1 January 2027. It shows enlarged photographs of oil paintings of bound and layered cloths, a reference to the textile bundles of the pre-Columbian Paracas culture. Admission is free; the work is on the outside of the building.

History

The palace was designed by the architect Ricardo Velázquez Bosco (Burgos, 1843 – Madrid, 1923). It was built for the General Exhibition of the Philippines, which opened in 1887, when the islands were a Spanish colony. The building was conceived as a greenhouse for plants from the Philippines and, according to the museum, went up in just five months thanks to prefabricated parts.

The model was the Crystal Palace that Joseph Paxton designed for the 1851 Great Exhibition in Hyde Park, London. The museum is direct about the exhibition’s purpose: it was colonial propaganda, and it displayed a group of between forty and fifty people from the islands, which the museum describes as the first “human zoo” in Spain.

One political event stands out in the building’s later history. On 10 May 1936 Manuel Azaña was proclaimed president of the Second Spanish Republic here, with the glass walls covered by curtains for the occasion. The palace was restored in 1975 and again between 1994 and 1998. In the 1990s it became a gallery of the Museo Reina Sofía, together with the neighbouring Palacio de Velázquez.

Architecture

The plan is a kind of Greek cross in which one arm is replaced by the entrance portico. A glass dome with a height of twenty-four metres rises over the crossing, and the rest of the roof is formed by glass cloister vaults. The iron-and-glass structure sits on a stone and brick base decorated with ceramic friezes designed by the Zuloaga brothers. The museum calls it one of the most representative examples of iron-and-glass architecture in Spain.

The palace stands next to a small pond with ducks and geese and is surrounded by horse chestnut trees.

Visiting: hours, price and transport

Admission: free, both for the Palacio de Cristal and for the Palacio de Velázquez.

Hours of the Retiro galleries: 10:00 to 21:00 from April to September and 10:00 to 18:00 from October to March, according to the museum in 2026. They close on 1 and 6 January, 1 May and 25 December, and while exhibitions are being installed. When open, the Palacio de Cristal may also close on rainy days and during heat alerts.

Address: Paseo de República de Cuba, 4, inside El Retiro Park.

Metro: Retiro (line 2), Ibiza (line 9) or Estación del Arte (line 1). The nearest Cercanías station is Madrid-Atocha.

Park hours: El Retiro is open from 6:00 to midnight from April to September and from 6:00 to 22:00 from October to March. The park may close in severe weather.

The galleries have no lockers, so travel light.

What else to see nearby

The Palacio de Velázquez, a short walk away, is by the same architect. It was built between 1881 and 1883 for a national mining exhibition and hosts free temporary exhibitions of the Museo Reina Sofía, so it is the natural alternative while the glass palace is closed.

El Retiro Park covers over 125 hectares and has more than 15,000 trees, according to Madrid’s tourism website. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Rowing boats can be hired on the large lake, which is overlooked by the Monument to Alfonso XII. Entry to the park is free.

For students

The park is a common place to study outdoors, run or meet friends, and it costs nothing. The Museo Reina Sofía’s main building near Atocha, where general admission costs €12 in 2026, has free opening hours on most days; the museum’s visit page lists them. Other museums in the city are covered in the post on museums in Madrid, and the Madrid city page lists places to study there.

The Palacio de Cristal in Madrid’s Retiro Park: history, architecture, the restoration that keeps it
