This post covers its history, what to see inside, and the opening hours, prices and rules for a visit.<\/p>\n<h2>History<\/h2>\n<p>The cathedral stands on the site of the Visigothic basilica of Saint Mary and, after it, the Great Mosque of the city. The first stone of the present building was laid in 1226 by King Ferdinand III, with Archbishop Rodrigo Jim\u00e9nez de Rada as the driving force. The eighth centenary of that date falls in 2026.<\/p>\n<p>The works lasted more than two centuries. The transept was finished in 1300, and the building was completed in 1493. The master builders ranged from Petrus Petri to Enrique Egas. Later periods added Renaissance, Baroque and neoclassical work, by Alonso de Covarrubias, Narciso Tom\u00e9 and Ventura Rodr\u00edguez among others.<\/p>\n<p>The cathedral is still a working church. Mass is said every day, and the old Hispano-Mozarabic rite is kept alive in the Mozarabic Chapel. The <a href=\"\/articles\/corpus-christi-day-toledo-spain\/\">Corpus Christi procession<\/a> belongs to cathedral life as well: the cathedral describes it as a tradition that has filled the streets of Toledo for centuries.<\/p>\n<h2>The building<\/h2>\n<p>The cathedral is Gothic, inspired by French models. It has five naves, a wide transept and an ambulatory with radiating chapels. According to Spain&#8217;s national tourism site, it is 120 metres long and 59 metres wide, and the roof rests on 88 columns. The stained glass dates from the 14th, 15th and 16th centuries.<\/p>\n<h2>What to see inside<\/h2>\n<p>The cultural visit includes these spaces:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Main Chapel<\/strong>: the gilded altarpiece has five sections with scenes from the New Testament. It was commissioned by Cardinal Cisneros and made between 1497 and 1504.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Choir<\/strong>: the lower stalls, begun in the 15th century, show the surrender of towns and fortresses up to the conquest of Granada. The 72 upper stalls are by Alonso Berruguete and Felipe Vigarny.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Sacristy and picture gallery<\/strong>: El Greco&#8217;s <em>The Disrobing of Christ<\/em>, with works by Caravaggio, Goya and Titian.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Transparente<\/strong>: a Baroque work in which daylight is part of the design.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chapter House<\/strong>: a coffered ceiling and wall paintings by Juan de Borgo\u00f1a.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Custodia of Enrique de Arfe<\/strong>: a monstrance that the cathedral counts among its main treasures.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Chapel of Santiago<\/strong>: a 15th-century chapel in flamboyant Gothic style with the tombs of \u00c1lvaro de Luna and his wife Juana de Pimentel.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Cloister<\/strong>, the crypt and the Tapestries and Textiles Museum.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Other chapels include the Chapel of the New Kings, the Chapel of Saint Ildefonso and the Chapel of the Sagrario. Some spaces, such as the Ochavo reliquary and the chapter archive and library, are not open to visitors.<\/p>\n<h2>Opening hours and tickets<\/h2>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.catedralprimada.es\/en\/cultural-visit\/tickets-toledo-cathedral\/\">cathedral&#8217;s ticket page<\/a> gives these hours for the cultural visit in 2026:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Monday to Saturday: 10:00 to 18:30<\/li>\n<li>Sunday: 14:00 to 18:30<\/li>\n<li>Closed on 1 January and 25 December, and when a celebration requires it<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Access closes 30 minutes before closing time. Hours are shorter on some feast days, for example in Holy Week, on Corpus Christi and on 15 August. Prices in 2026 are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Basic ticket: \u20ac12<\/li>\n<li>Reduced ticket: \u20ac8, for people aged 65 and over, youth card holders, students up to 18 years old and members of large families, with proof<\/li>\n<li>Children aged 8 to 14 with a family member: \u20ac6<\/li>\n<li>Children under 8 with a family member: free<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The cathedral also runs Lumina, an evening visit with light, sound and projections. It costs \u20ac24.90, or \u20ac33 combined with the basic ticket.<\/p>\n<p>Tickets are sold online and at the Cathedral Shop, opposite the visitor entrance. That entrance is the Puerta Llana, at Calle Cardenal Cisneros, 1. A ticket is valid only for the date and time printed on it, and it does not allow re-entry. A visit to all the spaces takes about two hours.<\/p>\n<h2>Rules and worship<\/h2>\n<p>Photography and filming are prohibited inside the cathedral, and mobile phones must be switched off. Visitors must dress appropriately, and food and drink are not allowed. Wheelchairs are lent free of charge at the ticket desk, and almost all areas are accessible.<\/p>\n<p>People who come to pray or attend Mass enter through the Puerta del Reloj and do not need a ticket. Toledo&#8217;s tourist board notes that from Monday to Friday, between 8:00 and 9:15, the naves alone are open with free access through that door. A sung Mass in the Hispano-Mozarabic rite is held in the Mozarabic Chapel at 9:00 from Monday to Saturday.<\/p>\n<h2>Getting there<\/h2>\n<p>Toledo is 25 minutes from Madrid-Atocha by Avant high-speed train. From Toledo station the walk to the old town takes about 20 minutes with the escalators, and city buses run to Plaza de Zocodover for \u20ac1.40. The cathedral is a short walk from there. Next to it stands the <a href=\"\/articles\/palacio-arzobispal-toledo-spain\/\">Palacio Arzobispal<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>For students<\/h2>\n<p>The reduced ticket applies to students up to 18 years old and to youth card holders, so older students need a youth card to get the lower price.
