It holds two medieval synagogues, the Museo Sefardí (Sephardic Museum) and a street plan that has changed little since the Middle Ages. This post explains the history of the quarter, what to see there, and the opening hours and prices published in 2026.

A short history of Jewish Toledo

According to the Red de Juderías de España, the network of Spanish cities with a Jewish heritage, Toledo is one of the Spanish cities where a Jewish presence is documented earliest, from the 4th century. After Alfonso VI took the city in 1085, the Jewish population grew and prospered, and scholars who arrived in the 12th century took part in the translation work for which Toledo became known.

The quarter reached its greatest extent under Alfonso X in the 13th century. Decline followed in the 14th century, and the attacks of 1391 hit the community hard. The Jewish quarter came to an end with the expulsion edict of 1492. The city’s tourist board describes medieval Toledo as a place where Muslims, Jews and Christians lived side by side for centuries, each with their own customs and in relative peace.

What to see

Sinagoga del Tránsito and Museo Sefardí

The Sinagoga del Tránsito, also called the Synagogue of Samuel ha-Leví, was commissioned in the 14th century by Samuel ha-Leví, who held several posts at the court of Pedro I of Castile, among them royal treasurer. The Red de Juderías dates the building to between 1355 and 1357. After 1492 the Catholic Monarchs handed it to the Order of Calatrava and it became a church. Its popular name comes from a painting of the Transit of the Virgin that hung there from the 17th century. It was declared a National Monument in 1877.

The Museo Sefardí was created by decree in 1964 and opened to the public in 1971. It is a state museum of the Ministry of Culture. The permanent exhibition follows the history of the Jews in Spain from Roman times to the expulsion and the later Sephardic communities around the world. More detail is in the post on the Tránsito synagogue.

Sinagoga de Santa María la Blanca

Two minutes on foot from the Tránsito stands the older synagogue, at Calle Reyes Católicos, 4. According to Toledo’s tourist board it was the main synagogue of the Jewish community, built in 1180 according to an inscription on a beam, rebuilt in the 13th century and turned into a church at the start of the 15th century. The interior has five aisles separated by horseshoe arches on octagonal pillars, with capitals decorated with pine cones, all in white.

Streets, gates and other buildings

Around the two synagogues the street plan of the medieval quarter survives. The Red de Juderías lists the Casa del Judío and the house of Samuel ha-Leví among the buildings linked to the Jewish past; part of that house is now the Museo del Greco. The Puerta del Cambrón, on Paseo de Recaredo, was known as the Puerta de los Judíos because it was the main entrance to the quarter. The Monasterio de San Juan de los Reyes, built by the Catholic Monarchs, stands in the same part of town.

Opening hours and prices in 2026

Museo Sefardí (Calle Samuel Leví): Tuesday to Saturday 9:30 to 20:00, Sundays and public holidays 10:00 to 15:00. The ticket office closes 15 minutes earlier. Closed on Mondays, 1 and 6 January, 1 May, 24, 25 and 31 December and one local holiday. General admission is €3 and reduced admission €1.50. A pass for the Museo Sefardí and the Museo del Greco, valid for five days, costs €5 and is sold at the ticket desks.

Free admission at the Museo Sefardí: Saturdays from 14:00 and Sundays, plus 18 April, 18 May, 12 October and 6 December. Under-18s, over-65s, holders of the Carné Joven and university students aged 18 to 25 enter free with proof.

Santa María la Blanca: open every day, 10:00 to 18:45 from 1 March to 15 October and 10:00 to 17:45 from 16 October to 28 February. Closed on 1 January and 25 December. General admission is €4; students and Carné Joven holders pay €3 on showing their card.

Tourist bracelet: the operator of Santa María la Blanca sells a bracelet for €14 that covers seven monuments, among them this synagogue, San Juan de los Reyes and the church of Santo Tomé, each of which costs €4 on its own.

The Museo Sefardí advises that March to June is its busiest period and recommends visiting between 9:30 and 11:00 or between 15:00 and 17:00. Check the museum’s website for temporary changes before going.

Getting there

The high-speed Avant train from Madrid-Atocha takes 25 minutes and runs about once an hour, according to the tourist board. From the railway station, city bus lines 5, 511, 61 and 62 go to Plaza de Zocodover; a ticket costs €1.40 and cannot be paid by card or phone. A taxi to Zocodover costs about €6. From Zocodover the Judería is a walk across the old town.

Allow half a day for the two synagogues and the streets between them, and a full day if the Museo del Greco and San Juan de los Reyes are added.

For students

The quarter is a compact case study in medieval Spanish history, Mudejar architecture and Sephardic culture, and the free entry for university students aged 18 to 25 at the Museo Sefardí keeps the cost low.
