They are held every year on and around 15 May in honour of the city&#8217;s patron saint, San Isidro Labrador (Saint Isidore the Labourer). This post explains who the saint was, what happens during the festivities, where the main events take place and how to get there.<\/p>\n<h2>The saint and his spring<\/h2>\n<p>San Isidro was a farm labourer and well-digger who was born and died in Madrid. More than a hundred miracles have been attributed to him, and many of them involve water. According to tradition he made a spring flow on a hot day to quench the thirst of his master, Iv\u00e1n de Vargas. Another story says that he saved his son from drowning in a well. The well is shown today in the Museum of San Isidro.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esmadrid.com\/en\/tourist-information\/ermita-san-isidro\">Ermita de San Isidro<\/a>, the saint&#8217;s chapel, stands beside the spring, on the far bank of the river Manzanares. A chapel is recorded there in 1499. In 1528 Empress Isabel of Portugal, wife of Charles V, ordered a new sanctuary to be built, in gratitude for the recovery of the emperor and of their son, the future Philip II, after they drank the water. The present building follows a design of 1724. It was badly damaged by fire in 1936 and rebuilt between 1940 and 1941. Behind it is the San Isidro cemetery, built in 1811.<\/p>\n<h2>What happens during the festivities<\/h2>\n<p>The festivities last about a week. The programme changes every year, but the main elements are the same:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>The romer\u00eda in the meadow.<\/strong> On 15 May people walk to the Pradera de San Isidro, the meadow beside the chapel, to drink the water of the spring and to eat outdoors with family and friends. An open-air mass is held on the esplanade near the chapel.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Traditional dress and dance.<\/strong> Many people dress as chulapos and chulapas, the traditional costume of Madrid, and dance the chotis in the street.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Free concerts and parades.<\/strong> Free activities take place across the city, with the Plaza Mayor, the Las Vistillas gardens and the Pradera de San Isidro as the main stages. They include a parade of giants and big-heads and concerts. The festivities open with a speech called the preg\u00f3n.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Religious ceremonies.<\/strong> According to the tourist board these run from 6 to 15 May and include the blessing of the water of the spring and a mass at the Colegiata de San Isidro.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Food and drink.<\/strong> The typical sweets are rosquillas, ring-shaped doughnuts. Listas are glazed, tontas are plain, those of Santa Clara are covered in dry meringue and francesas have almonds. The typical drink is limonada, made with wine, lemon, sugar and chopped fruit.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The city&#8217;s tourist board announces the next edition as running from early May until 16 May 2027. The full programme is usually published a few weeks before on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esmadrid.com\/en\/whats-on\/sanisidro-madrid\">tourist board&#8217;s San Isidro page<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2>The meadow that Goya painted<\/h2>\n<p>The meadow has been a meeting place for the people of Madrid for centuries. In 1788 Francisco de Goya was commissioned to paint a series of tapestry cartoons, and the sketches he made for it include The Meadow of San Isidro and The Hermitage of San Isidro on the Saint&#8217;s Feast Day. Both are kept at the <a href=\"\/articles\/the-prado-museum\/\">Prado Museum<\/a>. The first shows the crowd on the meadow with the Royal Palace and the skyline of Madrid in the background.<\/p>\n<p>Today the meadow is the Parque de San Isidro, a public park in the Carabanchel district with large grassy areas, a botanical path and a bike lane. It becomes the main stage of the festivities in mid-May.<\/p>\n<h2>The bullfighting fair<\/h2>\n<p>The Feria de San Isidro is a separate, ticketed event at the <a href=\"\/articles\/plaza-de-toros-de-las-ventas-madrid\/\">Las Ventas bullring<\/a>. It lasts about a month around the saint&#8217;s day. The fair in its present form dates from 1947. As an example, the 2026 edition ran from 8 May to 14 June, with 21 bullfights and a daily start at 7pm. The 2027 fair is announced for early May to mid-June, with dates still to be confirmed. The bullring is at Calle de Alcal\u00e1 237, next to Ventas Metro station (lines 2 and 5).<\/p>\n<p>The street festivities and the bullfighting fair are independent of each other, so visitors can take part in one without the other.<\/p>\n<h2>Places to visit and how to get there<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Pradera and Ermita de San Isidro:<\/strong> Paseo de la Ermita del Santo 72-74, in Carabanchel. The nearest Metro station is Marqu\u00e9s de Vadillo (line 5). The meadow is a short walk from the <a href=\"\/articles\/el-rio-manzanares-madrid-spain\/\">Manzanares river<\/a> and the Madrid R\u00edo park.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Museum of San Isidro. The Origins of Madrid:<\/strong> Plaza de San Andr\u00e9s 2, at La Latina Metro station (line 5). It stands on the site of the house where the saint lived and has a section on the saint and the traditions of his time. Entry is free. In 2026 it opens from Tuesday to Sunday, 10am to 8pm, and on 15 May from 9.30am.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Colegiata de San Isidro:<\/strong> Calle de Toledo 37, between La Latina and Tirso de Molina Metro stations. The tomb of San Isidro is at its high altar. The church was Madrid&#8217;s cathedral until the Almudena Cathedral was completed. Entry is free.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>For students<\/h2>\n<p>For students in <a href=\"\/study-abroad\/cities2-madrid-en.htm\">Madrid<\/a>, San Isidro is the easiest way to see the city&#8217;s own traditions at first hand, and the concerts, parades and dancing in the programme of the city council are free.
