Madrid’s tourist board places it less than 50 km from the capital by road. People come for two things: the 15th-century Mendoza castle and the granite landscape of La Pedriza. This post covers what there is to see, the current situation of the castle, the rules for walking in La Pedriza and how to get there by bus.

Where it is

The town lies inside the Parque Regional de la Cuenca Alta del Manzanares, a protected area created by a Madrid regional law of 1985. According to Spain’s official tourism site, the park was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1993. Manzanares el Real is also one of the gateways to the Sierra de Guadarrama National Park, of which La Pedriza forms part. The river Manzanares, which later runs through the city of Madrid, comes down from these mountains and fills the reservoir beside the town. More on the mountains is in the post on the Sierra de Guadarrama.

The Mendoza castle

The castle of Manzanares el Real dates from the 15th century and is described by the national and Madrid tourist boards as one of the best preserved castles in the region. It was first a fortress and later a residence of the Mendoza family. The building has a square floor plan, round towers at the corners and a polygonal keep. Inside there is a courtyard, a basement and six floors, and the first floor has a Gothic gallery. It stands on the site of an earlier Romanesque and Mudejar hermitage, and remains of that building are preserved inside. A barbican surrounds the castle; its arrow slits carry the carved cross of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.

The castle cannot be visited at present. Madrid’s official tourism site states in 2026 that visits to the castle are not open to the public. It can still be seen from outside, with La Pedriza behind it and the reservoir in front. Check the Madrid tourism page for Manzanares el Real before planning a trip around an interior visit.

Other sights in the town

Church of Nuestra Señora de las Nieves, also from the 15th century, in the centre of the town.

Hermitage of Nuestra Señora de la Peña Sacra, on a rock above the town. The walk up gives a wide view of La Pedriza.

Cañada Real Segoviana bridge, on the old drovers’ road.

Ethnological Museum, with archaeological remains found in the municipality and a reconstruction of a traditional house.

The town and its surroundings have been used as a film location, among others for El Cid.

La Pedriza

La Pedriza is an area of granite domes, walls and boulders shaped by water and wind. It is known for hiking and for rock climbing, and in the second half of the 19th century it was a hideout for bandits. Easy routes such as the Senda de las Formas pass rocks named after the animals they resemble; longer routes lead towards El Yelmo and Las Torres.

The best starting point is the La Pedriza Visitor Centre of the national park, 2 km from the town centre on the Camino de la Pedriza. It is open every day from 9:00 to 15:00, except on 1 and 6 January and 24, 25 and 31 December. It has a permanent exhibition on the Sierra de Guadarrama and gives advice on routes.

The national park sets these rules for La Pedriza:

Parking at Canto Cochino is free but limited to 270 vehicles, and private cars cannot book a place.

From 1 October to 31 May the access road is closed to motor vehicles on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays from 10:30 to 16:00. In summer it is closed for most of the day, every day.

On weekends and public holidays the car park is usually full between 8:30 and 9:00.

Bathing in the river Manzanares is not allowed.

Camping is not allowed. Sleeping out without a tent is permitted only in three zones: Las Torres, El Laberinto and El Yelmo.

Dogs must be kept on a lead.

Getting there

By bus, interurban line 724 runs from the Plaza de Castilla interchange in Madrid to Manzanares el Real and on to El Boalo. Line 720 links the town with Colmenar Viejo and Collado Villalba. From the bus stop next to the church, or the stop at the entrance to La Pedriza, the visitor centre is about 15 minutes on foot.

By car, the route from Madrid follows the M-607 towards Colmenar Viejo, then the M-609 and the M-608.

For students

Manzanares el Real works well as a day trip for anyone studying in Madrid: the bus leaves from a metro interchange, and the walks cost nothing. Go on a weekday or arrive early at weekends, bring water and proper footwear, and plan around the bus timetable rather than the car park. Students looking for a course in the capital can browse schools in Spain.

Manzanares el Real near Madrid:
