Health Care, Disease Control, Crime and Safety in Angola

Health

The health system of Angola is at a considerably lower level than other counties. Many children in Angola do no have the chance to grow and become adults.

Approximately 170 children of 1000 born in Angola will die before age 5. The high mortality rate is due to the low rate of vaccinations—only 1 out of 3 Angolan children are immunized.

In addition to the above, there is a lack of health centers, doctors and nurses in Angola.

The few doctors and nurses working in Angola do so mostly in private clinics, and most of them are not from Angola.

There are some state run clinics, but do not have enough qualified workers.

In rural areas there are ritual healing practitioners who use magic potions to rid the patients of evil spirits.

To enter Angola it is mandatory to be immunized against yellow fever.

Other recommended vaccinations are Hepatitis, Tetanus, Typhoid, and Meningitis.

Safety

Following the civil war there are no real dangerous areas in Angola.

The only danger are the mines that have not been deactivated yet. For this reason great caution should be taken when traveling to the center of the country.

Most of the mined areas have warning signs, but not all of them.

Also cautions should be exercised at night in the capital, and in some unsafe neighbourhoods.
