A landlocked nation, Botswana is bordered by South Africa to the south and southeast, Namibia to the west, Zambia to the north, and Zimbabwe to the northeast.

The capital of Botswana is Gaborone. One of Africa's fastest-growing cities, Gaborone lies in the flat valley between Kgale and Oodi hills, on the Notwane River in the south eastern corner of Botswana, and 15 km from the South African border. It has the air of a village that has hastily grown up into a city but it aspires to have all the facilities of the modern city and largely, it manages to do so. The university and the airport are both located in this city.

Francistown is the second largest city in Botswana and often described as the "Capital of the North". It is located in eastern Botswana, about 400 kilometres north-northeast from the capital, Gaborone. The city is a major transportation hub.

Comprised of three great salt pans (the largest on earth) the vast Makgadikgadi Pans are austere and beautiful. During the annual rains, depressions in the pans form temporary lakes and the surrounding grasses turn green. Herd animals gather at the watering hole and water birds feed on algae and tiny crustaceans.
