Health Care, Disease Control, Crime and Safety in Switzerland

You are here: Countries / Switzerland

Switzerland’s health system meets the important goals of good health outcomes and universal health coverage, but these successes come at a high financial cost. The Swiss healthcare system compares well with other OECD countries. It has universal health-insurance coverage, permitting access to a broad range of modern medical services, and patients are largely satisfied with the health care they receive.

No special immunizations or medications are necessary for travel to Switzerland. Tick precautions are advised for rural and forested areas. Altitude sickness may occur in travelers who ascend rapidly to altitudes greater than 2500 meters.

Crime rates are low in Switzerland. However, pick-pocketing and purse snatching do occur in the vicinity of train and bus stations, airports, and some public parks, especially during peak tourist periods (such as Summer and Christmas) and when conferences, shows, or exhibits are scheduled in major cities.
