When in other countries, it is best to know the transportation and communication services available in the area beforehand for you to familiarize yourself with. Take note of the airports, transportation means, telecommunication services and the like.

The Ambouli Airport is the international airport in Djibouti, found in a few kilometres from its capital city. The Ambouli airport, together with the domestic airports in Tadjourah and Obock are the only airports in the country with paved runways. The other 10 airports have unpaved ones. Air Djibouti is the airline company of the country, partly owned by the government, and serves domestic and international flights to various overseas destinations. The company’s co-owner is Air France.

There are taxis available from the airport which will take you to the city. Just take note of the fare so that you will know what exactly to pay the driver. Rates are slightly higher when you are to go in the rural areas. When touring the country, keep in mind that some of the tourist destinations are not reachable by taxis or buses. These places, like the famous Lake Abbe, can only be accessed by four-wheel drives. When going to the beaches, ferry and boat rides are available though at times they only take rides during the weekends. Djibouti public buses are found in the city square and seats 10-12 people. Some are old and non-air conditioned but it will safely take you to your desired destination.

Djibouti Telecom is the only telecommunications provider in the country. The Television de Djibouti is the only TV station and operates 2 domestic radio stations as well.
