Education in Dominica

You are here: Countries / Dominica

The education system of Dominica has been continuing its journey to a more standardized and high quality education system which can cater to the Dominican students. The country experienced difficulties in its educational aspect – poor quality of educational materials especially in the remote areas. It is quite difficult for them to transport instructional materials throughout the country especially in the rural areas that’s why the quality of education in those areas are lower than in the areas near the country’s Ministry of Education.

Dominica has medicine colleges such as the All Saints University of Medicine in Roseau and the Ross University in Portsmouth. Though the country has their own state college, which was formerly known as Clifton Dupigmy Community College, some Dominican students still strive to leave the country and study abroad. Some students go to Cuba, the United States of America or the United Kingdom and apply for scholarships to experience education there. This is one reason why the number of Dominica’s population has not been increasing (migration of its citizens to other countries).

The country’s problems in its education situation is very evident especially in the financial aspect which gives reason to foreign organizations like the European Union and the World Bank to give financial assistance to the country and allot enough funding for education. Dominica is now focusing on developing and making its education situation better by the construction of new schools and rehabilitation of old schools, adaptation of curriculum in the rural areas to their condition while still following its national education system, and support provided to the country’s teachers and other professionals.
