Visa application requirements for Ghana

For foreign nationals who wish to visit the Republic of Ghana, these travel documents are required: valid passport, visa (tourist, business, student or transit), return tickets (or proof of travel itinerary), and letter of invitation from residency or business party in Ghana. Evidence of sufficient financial means may be needed by the Ghana Immigration Service to approve of the traveller’s stay in the country.

As part of the Economic Community of West African States, Ghana allows citizens of the other member countries of the organization to enter the country without a visa. These countries are Benin, Burkina Faso, Cabo Verde, Côte d’ Ivoire, Gambia, Guinee, Guinee Bissau, Liberia, Mali, Niger, Nigeria, Senegal, Sierra Leone, and Togo. Moreover, visitors from the countries of Hong Kong, Singapore, Egypt, Mauritius and Kenya are not also required a visa. Other foreign nationals of countries not listed earlier should apply for a visa to be able to enter Ghana.

Application for Ghanaian visa may take up to 4 working days for personal application and up to 10 working days for mailed application. However, this can also depend upon the traveller’s nationality and/or the type of visa he is applying for. Visa to Ghana is valid for 3 months from the issue date but the length of stay is upon the airport official’s discretion. Only a period of 30 days is guaranteed but it can be extended (when in Ghana) up to a year for specific purposes and are subject to approval by the Ghana Immigration Service.
