Honduras is in the heart of Central America and is surrounded by high tropical mountains. Its northern border of the Caribbean Sea offers long stretches of beautiful beach, and off the coast is the Bay Islands, which is also surrounded by the world’s 2nd largest coral reefs. The country is also endowed with beautiful caves, waterfalls, hot water springs, and lakes.

The world-famous Maya ruins or the Ruinas de Copan, thousands of years old ruins of the city of Maya-Indian culture, can be found in Copan, one of its administrative divisions. Among its tourist locations are Tegucigalpa, the country’s capital, where one can find the Basilica of Supaya, Central Park, Metropolitan Zoo, Church of Saint Francis, the Historical Museum, and National Art Gallery; Caribbean Coast that has the Cacao Lagoon, a Carnival Week, a Cuervo y Salado Wildlife Refuge, La Ceiba Butterfly and Insect Museum, the Pico Bonito National Park, the Garifuna Villages and Trujillo Museum; and Western Highlands with a colonial museum, Santa Maria Cathedral and Clock, Celaque National Park, Fort of San Cristobal, and the El Naranja Eco Archaeological Park, Palapanzak Waterfalls in Lake Yojoa, and the Guamilito Market Crafts Center and market place in San Pedro Sula.

The other tourist destinations in the country are the Bay Islands in Roatan, that has breath-taking islands which can be reached by a short ferry boat ride from Tegucigalpa; Lago de Yojoa, which is the country’s biggest natural lake beside a road from San Pedro Sula to Siguatepeque; Comayaque, Siguatepeque’s neighbor city, with a cathedral that owns the oldest bell in the American continent; and Siguatepeque that has big forests of pine trees, and where the Festival of the Pines is celebrated April 5-15 every year.
