Health Care, Disease Control, Crime and Safety in Ireland

You are here: Countries / Ireland

The quality of healthcare systems in Ireland are quite superior although facilities are limited in some rural areas and gaining access to hospitals is sometimes difficult. Ireland and the UK are the only EU countries where you can obtain public health care without having to make social security contributions and this includes students. In addition, there are several schemes to help reduce the cost of paying for prescribed medication.

No special immunizations or medications are necessary for travel to Ireland.

Ireland has a low rate of violent crime, although that rate is increasing. There have been instances of violence toward those who appear to be members of racial minority groups. There is a high incidence of petty crime: mostly theft, burglary, and purse snatching in major tourist areas. Beware of pickpockets and bag snatchers.
