You are here: Countries / Latvia

For foreign nationals who wish to enter the country of Latvia, certain travel documents are needed before they will be granted entry. Entry requirements in Latvia include the individual’s passport (with at least 2 blank pages and is valid for at least 6 months valid before travel date), passport-size photos, visa (if needed), medical insurance, purpose of entry/visit to Latvia, round trip tickets to and fro the country, and proof of place of residence in the country (hotel reservation or inviting party address).

Visa is not required for foreign nationals like the British, Canadians, Americans, Australians, and individuals who are from member countries of the European Union for a stay of not more than 90 days (within a 6-month period only). If they want to stay for more than 90 days, they are to apply for a residence permit in the Latvian Office of Citizenship and Migration Affairs. All travelers need a passport when going to Latvia except for European Union nationals with a valid national ID card.

Since the country of Latvia joined the Schengen agreement along with other European countries, access and entry to many European countries was made easily available to foreign nationals wanting to cruise the continent. The Schengen visa allows entry to its 24 member countries which include Austria, Belgium, Germany, Denmark, Finland, Czech Republic, Estonia, France, Greece, Iceland, Hungary, Italy, Norway, the Netherlands, Lithuania, Malta, Poland, Luxemburg, Portugal, Spain, Sweden, Slovakia, Slovenia, and Latvia. The individual’s purpose of visit must be leisure, tourism, or business affairs.
