Religious Beliefs and Spirituality in Serbia

You are here: Countries / Serbia

The country is religiously tolerant. The dominant religion is Christian Orthodox; however, there are other religions being practiced in the country such as Islam, Roman Catholicism, Protestantism, Judaism and others. The country does not consider a national religion, but the Serbian Orthodox Church has contributed greatly to the preservation of the Serbian culture and traditions. In today’s society, the Serbian Orthodox Church has somehow to a certain point become the dominant religion in Serbia which makes Christianity, its followers, a dominant religious sector in Serbia.

The current major religions present in the country are Catholicism, Protestantism, Judaism, Islam and the oriental cults. The Jews present originated from Spain. They were the ones who fled from the persecution of Jews conducted by the Inquisition. Thousands of those families fled to the neighboring countries that were more tolerant in their beliefs. The Catholics present in Serbia are mostly present in the north while Islam is present greatly in the south. In most countries there is religious tolerance because you really cannot force an individual to belief in something that he truly does not believe in. Serbia accepts all religions and that is an example to those who are intimidated to open up their religious sectors.
