Seychelles is inhabited predominantly by Roman Catholics.  About 85% of the population are Roman Catholics.  In Seychelles history, the initial white settlers were the French who brought Roman Catholicism in the country.  During the 19th century when the British occupied the territory, they have tried to establish Protestantism.  Currently, Protestants in the country sum up to 10% of the population, about 7% are Anglicans with the majority of them coming from families converted by missionaries from the late 19th century to the early 20th century.  Other Protestant groups in the country are Pentecostals and Seventh Day Adventists.  The remaining 5% of the population are adherent to other religions like Buddhism, Hinduism and Islam.  However, you cannot find any temples or mosques in any part of the country, but, there are no restrictions imposed on the form of worship to any religion.

Although Seychellois are devout in their faith, it is quite common to see them consult a local seer, more popularly known as bon homme de bois or bon femme de bois, either for fortune telling or acquisition of amulets or charms, locally know as gris-gris, for protection or bringing harm to their enemies.  Against the disapproval of the clergy and their civil authorities, the people dwell in their belief in magic, sorcery or witchcraft as a result of their seeing little inconsistencies against their own observance of their orthodox religion.

Religion has never been a problem in the country.  In fact, most Sunday masses are well attended.  Even religious holidays are celebrated by the whole country to observe their faith and as a social event.  There is mutual respect found for each religious community.  The country’s unity has never been hampered because of diversity in beliefs.
