The Syrian society is extremely stratified before that people of different social groups and caste systems do not socialize with one another. Those of the lower classes are not allowed to communicate with the members of the upper class, and the upper class would not even dare to communicate with the lower class. Aside from the person’s class, society is also divided among the white and fair skinned people and the black people. The black people are given lower rank positions in organizations throughout the country, and the lighter skinned people are given all the power and authority.

Majority of the Syrians are Arabs, with almost 80% of the population being Arabs and speaking Arabic language. As an Arab country, it is very much inclined with the Arabic culture just like when it comes to marriage. Marriage among couples are arranged by both party’s parents. Also, polygamy is acceptable, just like in other Muslim countries. However, the man has to show first that he can support his wives financially before he can marry another. This is a result of them passing a law on polygamy, which is a first in all Arab countries.

The elderly are deemed as the highest authority in the society especially in the household. The oldest member in the household gets to decide on all things concerning the family, and is responsible for providing for the family. The male is most likely the head of the family and has the authority. On the other hand, the women are responsible in the household where they care for their children and can work in their own field.
