You are here: Countries / Syria

There are over a hundred airports in the country of Syria, 29 of which have paved runways.  The Damascus International Airport, completed in 1982, is the country’s main airport and serves as a connecting point for several major airlines in the world. The Latakia International Airport has limited facilities as compared to the one in Damascus but operates chartered domestic flights as well as flights to Beirut. There are buses available outside the airports. One can also make use of the taxi to roam around the city and go to other provinces of Syria.  The Syrian Arab Airlines is the main airline company in the country and operates flights in Aleppo, Al Qamishli, Latakia and other domestic airports, as well as flights to other European and African countries.

The buses in Syria offer cheap fares and are very much available during the day. The orange-and-white buses which are government owned operate in the country’s major cities for public transportation. Visitors should not worry about the traffic situation in Syria as most roads, especially those in the cities, are in good condition.

For people wanting to travel privately, taxis are the best transport vehicle for them. Their metered taxis called shared taxis are available in the cities of Damascus and Aleppo. If there is no taxi meter, you should first make negotiations with the driver regarding the price before getting in and going to your desired destination for you to save money.

Be sure to always have your passport with you as the public transport authorities will check it before and while boarding.
